We used the east side approach, starting from the Flume Creek TH. The last 8 miles or so were on dirt, but we got there easily in a Honda CRV. There are some active logging operations on the road, but they do not do any logging on weekends and the road is clear. However, if you go during the week you might encounter delays on the road due to logging activity.
This was a class 1 hike that was entirely on well maintained trails. From the trailhead we took the Flume Creek Trail. This is a very nice trail that goes through a mixed conifer forest. The trail never gets too steep; it follows the contour of mountain and has some long switchbacks that eliminate some of the steepness. Grizzly bears inhabit the area, but we did not see any. In fact, we saw no signs of bears at all.
After about 3 miles we came to a ridge east of the peak, where we got our first good views of the peak. We continued on the Flume Creek Trail to the south side of the mountain, where we came to a junction with the Abercrombie Mountain Trail, which we took to the summit.
There are expansive views at the summit; unfortunately on this day the views were largely obscured by wildfire smoke that seems to be affecting all of eastern Washington right now. The summit area was nice though, so we hung out there for about 30 minutes. At one time there was a fire lookout at the summit, but all that is left of the lookout are 4 concrete footings.
Synopsis
This was an enjoyable hike, and I would hike it occasionally if I lived in the area. |
