Made really good time going up trail. The area has a fairly extensive network of old 4x4 roads and random use trails that intersect in multiple places, but the trail is always well marked and never hard to follow. I took the Heartbreak Ridge route to get to the summit, then looped around the north side of the summit and dropped down to rejoin the PCT. Someone went a bit crazy with the "heartbreak" signs along the ridge trail, I counted 18 of them for the stretch of trail that's just over a mile. On the way back I took a gamble by following an unmarked 4x4 road in an attempt to get to Aldrich Butte without having to do any backtracking. My plan worked out perfectly- not really sure why the route I took wasn't marked at the main PCT junction, but further down the way it was clearly marked as a route to Aldrich Butte. |
