3rd Hike on Day 5 of the Columbia River Gorge. The TH is at the Angel's Rest TH and you use the Angel's Rest Trail to hike up to Coopey Falls. On my rainy day earlier in the week, I bought a hiking book concentrated solely on the Columbia River Gorge. It offered a lot more detail into the hikes I wanted to do, including mileage and elevation and maps. But it wasn't perfect and had it's inaccuracies. The Coopey Falls description was a perfect example. "At .8 mile, you reach Coopey Falls, a 150- to 175- foot horsetail-type waterfall. There are several spur lookout trails to the left for views down onto the crashing waters of the falls." With the exception of the mileage, that description is for the lower Coopey Falls, not the Upper Coopey Falls that the trail and the book's map, take you to. On my GPS Track, you will see that on the return I took an overlook spur that gives you some viewpoints out into the Gorge. I could actually see down to the lower falls a bit from one spot. But the only way to get a good view of the entire fall, would be to visit some nuns and ask permission to hike to the base, as it is on Convent property. I might try that next time.

Upper Coopey Falls was nice, but also had very limited views unless you did what I did and butt slid down a steep rocky use trail for about 20 feet and stood on a tiny landing with just enough room for me. Unlike the lower falls, which are a 150-175 foot horsetail, upper Coopey Falls is about 35 feet high. It was a pretty little fall though.

All in all, it was a nice hike with a beautiful trail through forest and the greens. Coopey Falls isn't that heavily visited like some of the other falls, but the Angel's Rest hike is popular. Even with that, I only saw 4 other people on the trail.

Nice hike with Ron. Unfortunately the top was fogged in so we didn't get the stellar views of the Columbia River gorge. The clouds started lifting on the way down revealing nice views from partway up to the rest.
