| no partners | | With rain threatening ,foggy and a cool day I knew beforehand that the views wouldn’t be the best. Parked at the Bear Mountain Inn which has a $10 fee in the summer. I happened to get there early and not wanting to be a scofflaw I returned to the booth when it was manned and was told fuhgettaboutit . Started making my way around Hessian Lake after first looking at the model area for trail construction on the AT. After less than a mile of easy walking I turned up Major Welch Trail, it’s relentless steep rocky uphill reminded me of West Boulder Saddle trail. Someone had placed a chain to help with going up a particularly steep smooth rock. After 3/4 of the way up crossed over Perkins Memorial drive, yes you can drive up, then only a short bit of climbing remained. The memorial tower was closed and there were only 2 cars parked in its lot. Initially it appeared there would be no views but after a few minutes and about the time I started down the AT a break occurred in the northward view toward the River. No NYC skyline views today .The AT is clearly marked and constructed with many ,over a thousand hand hewn 4 to5 foot thousand pound steps, along this section. Usually not a fan of steps but found these positioned to make for an easy descent. Finally ran into the first other hikers about halfway down and then a couple of large groups near the bottom, didn’t encounter any thru hikers today. |
