| no partners | | renewed our motel reservation for a second night as there were thunderstorms in the forecast
left rapid city and drove past mount rushmore to the sylvan lake area of custer state park
first hike was to little devils tower via little devils tower trail, a mile east of sylvan lake
easy ascent initially through aspen and pine, then a steeper grade on the spur trail to the summit
the upper part is a fun scramble on granite
great views of black elk peak and cathedral spires from the top
back to the car and on down needles highway to cathedral spires trailhead
the parking area is at a hairpin turn and was quite busy
this hike was steeper from the start, and less than a mile long
winding through forest and granite spires, ending at an overlook
good views throughout of the spires
both of these hikes were excellent, just a little short on mileage for a full day
we drove down needles highway and took a cutoff over to iron mountain road
wanted to hike the iron mountain loop, and got about a half mile out
it was hot and thunderstorms were building, so we cut that one short and headed back to rapid city
pretty country and a scenic drive
the entire area got pounded by storms that night |
