second day of hiking in wind cave national park
we did the out and back along cold brook canyon on the southern end of the park
the trail runs from highway 385 west to the park boundary
saw prairie dogs along the way and a bison on the return
pleasant walk without much elevation change
lunch at our elk mountain campsite
next we set out on lookout point trail, mostly on open prairie
lots of prairie dogs and nice views
a short while on highland trail, dropping into a creek through ponderosa forest
continued the loop, returning on centennial trail along beaver creek
two miles back to norbeck trailhead through more poison ivy than i've ever seen in my life
it lined the trail and we couldn't avoid it
we really didn't enjoy this part of the hike because of it
had i known, i wouldn't have done it, and felt bad inflicting that on sue
can't recommend the centennial segment
we scrubbed our legs once back at the car, and i think i got away with three little spots of it
we then went for a scenic drive through custer state park, finishing on the wildlife loop
we saw pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep and bison
elk mountain is a nice campground
would stay there again
