Lake County is so named because of the numerous large lakes within its borders. In terms of area, Lake County is the 19th largest county in the continental U.S.
The hike was mostly on a forest road or on a trail, but there was a bit of easy off-trail through open country to get to the summit. The road walking was through a mixed conifer forest, and was pretty enjoyable actually. There were a couple of snow banks near the summit, but they were easy to walk around.
At the summit I located the benchmark and both reference marks, and I also saw the wood and wires from the height-of-light.
There were expansive views at the summit, but it was very smoky and hazy from forest fires further north in Oregon, so views weren't as nice as they normally would be.
The drive to the trailhead was partially on pavement and partially on a well-graded gravel road. Most any vehicle could get to where I parked. I had read that the road really degraded beyond where I parked, but I did not find that to be the case. It would be a very easy drive for a 4WD vehicle, and I could have coaxed my rental RAV4 up the road without too much trouble.
I enjoyed this hike much more than I thought that I would, and it is a great summertime hike. |
