This is one of the best hikes I have done in the Bitterroots. Excellent setting and views from the top and some scenic sections of trail to balance out the stretches of snags.

We got an early start because I knew portions of the trail would get warm due to the absence of shade. The trail was in immaculate shape, which is due to the fact that the tower is manned each summer, so the trail is cleared every year around the beginning of July. We pretty much cruised to the summit at a nice pace and enjoyed the modest grades to the top. The lookout volunteer was up and about and we chatted for some time. The volunteer served in the fire tower during the 70s and now comes back each summer for a stint, as a volunteer. She educated me on all the peaks and notable terrain features surrounding the summit and gave me a run down of the recent fires and efforts to clear trails in the area, etc. After chatting and making sure Dot got a little break with some water, we returned the way we came. The descent was especially scenic with the arrival of some clouds, however, the stretch of snags to the intersection with the Big Sand Lake Trail still felt warm and Dot was happy to reach water shortly after.
