There was a great view of the canyon and Steamboat Mountain only a few steps from camp. I was careful to camp in the middle of a clearing away from the tall Ponderosa Pines because thunderstorms were moving in. Sleeping in the back of my FJ also provided some extra protection from lightning strikes but fortunately the lightning part of the storms either stayed away that night or I slept through the noise (I sleep soundly when camped in the mountains) There was an absolutely gorgeous sunset that evening over the GC south rim.
The next morning I hiked the section of the Rainbow Rim Trail from Timp Pt to North Timp Point and returned - a round trip distance of 6 miles. This is an easy hike with some up and down and also appears to be an excellent mountain bike trail. The views of the Ponderosa Forest along the trail are almost as stunning as the canyon views. There has been a fire along the first mile but it resulted in very little damage to the tall pines - maybe it was a controlled burn. |
