This was a hike to the summit of Gray Butte (elevation of 5,108 feet and prominence of 1,908 feet). Gray Butte is a volcanic peak and it is part of the Crooked River caldera. Gray Butte is in Jefferson County, NE of Bend.

I hiked from the south on a road that goes up to the summit, which has a couple of antennae on it. I drove my rental Jeep Compass to within 1.5 miles of the summit at a point where the road got rougher and steeper. You'd need a legitimate 4WD vehicle to drive to the summit.

It was a straightforward walk on the road to the summit, although it was a bit steep so I got a decent workout on the hike. There are some nice 360 degree views at the summit, including a view of a snow capped peak that was either Mount Jefferson or Mount Hood -- I'll check when I get back home.

Since this was simply a road walk it isn't the most exciting hike in the world. However, it has some decent views and there are worse things to do if you happen to be in the area with some time to kill.
