This is a paved trail that would be great for the grandkids and I! Weaves it's way through Manzanita and Juniper with some nice views of lots of Ponderosa at the turn around. I got a kick out of a couple acorn woodpeckers chasing each other around for half the trail! :y:

This trail has a colorful history. After being developed by the forest service, the land was sold to a private owner. Deciding to irritate the local community, the land owner closed off complete access the the popular trail to all visitors, and appeared to threaten community magazines/forest services/newspapers/guides/website owners/publishers with removing this trail from existence in their advertisements and information brochures under threat of legal action. (To my knowledge, having obsolete information is not a crime...half the internet would be illegal  )

However, said landowner encountered a problem whereby the land was not zoned for development. Thus, it appears that the local land zoning board of Pinetop/Lakeside, in suggesting the landowner to not be a complete asshat to the community (and everyone in general), convinced this owner to reopen the trail. The landowner partially complied, where the paved part of the trail has been reopened. In response the zoning committee appears to have granted the rezoning request, allowing the land to be developed into an RV park.

The paved trail is surrounded by private property signs throughout the entire trail. The trail signs at the trailhead warn the hiker to stay on the trail, and the end of trail sign clearly marks the end of the trail, with private property signs posted about every 20 ft all along the way. The note on the HAZ guide sums this situation up fairly well.

In any event, the local community appears to benefit again from a trail in the heart of the the town, and perhaps the landowner got a small lesson in humility. However, based on the owners' previous behavior, one wonders if the current situation will last. I might think that people staying in an RV park would rather like a short trail to stretch their legs, but who knows.

Belated post. Wife and did this loop as we were heading out of town from our Pinetop vacation. Nice easy loop. No elevation change. Info boards along the way, though several were aged beyond reading. Fairly exposed. There were pines to junipers, but seemed to be in the sun for most of the loop. Rim view was ok. The land below the rim didn't seem to fall away like it does closer to Payson. Went CCW on the loop, which seemed to be the exact opposite of everyone else. Saw close to 70 hikers in that short time frame, which was more than I saw in all my other "Pinetop hikes" combined.

Spent the 4th in Show Low with some family, needed to expend some child energy before the drive back. Given the flat nature of this trail I decided to see if the youngest (17 months, usually a carry) could hike it and she nailed it. Trail was great, easy to follow, views were okay... spent more time starry-eyed over the sight of all three of my kids hiking. We accidentally did the loop backwards and some of the signs were meant to read in order.... Great diversity of vegetation on route, the ditch was cool to see and read about. Saw maybe 3 other groups on trail.

we had a little time left and the wind was actually chilling out a little so we shot over and did this after the show low bluff trail. nice little interpretive loop and sierra enjoyed reading the signs. nice views on the back part. perfect late afternoon hike.

we went out to the random Black Horse Brewery, after a quick trip to the Severnson Wildlife Area, for a beer. it was random and fun. had dinner at the House (excellent burger!)

great first day in show low.

Most of the interpretive signs were missing on the first half of the trail. Nice short little walk with pretty views where the paved trail ends.

This hike was easy enough for my friend to walk with her bad knee. It offered some great views and a variety of vegetation, all within easy access of the parking lot. A large portion of the hike is wheelchair accessible. Still very beautiful.

Unfortunately, there is some graffiti on the interpretive signs.

Nice little trail, with my young son and the family puppy. Fairly nice views of the Rim. We hiked off trail a little bit on a path down the rim as well, to the property fence.

Hiked this at sunset after a soggy day working in Show Low and Concho. A short distance into the hike, an obnoxious group of elderly(!) hikers overtook me, but Grandpa turned around, as "hiking" on an asphalt walkway was too much nature for him!

Anyways, the view from the trail's overlook is quite nice, and one can see the vast forested lands to the south. There is an interesting fact sheet on ponderosa pine uses at the trailhead.

People watching entertains me, and tonight was no exception with the hordes of Phoenicians invading the high country, and heavily tattooed folks stocking up on beer, camping supplies, and more beer at Wal-Mart.

Looking for a place to hike near Show Low, as I have time to kill there every Wed. This isn't much of a trail but it sure beats sitting in my school bus in the Walmart parking lot! And I'm on the clock while hiking, so that's nice, too! While hiking this trail today, I decided to go off of it a bit into the woods. Upon returning to the trail I met an old man and his dog. Turns out he was very interesting. A former river rafting guide, he had lived in Alaska and had done a lot of interesting things in his life. We walked along together for an hour or so.
