I got off of I-90 at the town of Superior, MT and drove from there to Freezeout Pass, in Montana. The drive was about an hour from the interstate on very well graded dirt roads -- the drive was no problem for my rental RAV4. I doubt if the road is ever in better shape.
From Freezeout Pass I started out on an old road bed which morphed into a trail that went all the way to the summit. The road bed was soft dirt and was a delight to hike on. The trail contoured around the side of a slope and was a bit steep in places. I made my way to a saddle and from there the trail went up a steep ridgeline to the summit.
This hike definitely exceeded my expectations. There were LOTS of cool looking wildflowers along the way and the views were very impressive, especially of different shades of vibrant green of the surrounding mountains and basins.
The summit was open and there were impressive views. I located the benchmark, which was embedded in a rock about 100 feet from the summit.
I am definitely glad that I did this hike! |
