Decided to do Butcher Jones again first thing in the morning! Was the first car there around 6 am, when I finished close to 9 am there were probably 50 cars and a bus parked in the lot. First half was very quiet, interrupted only by a few motor boats, planes, and luckily a few deer towards the end! Given the amount of foot traffic on the way back, I suspect I may have been the only hiker to see those deer this morning. The trip back involved lots of waiting and passing large families and groups, but that's to be expected on a fairly accessible trail so close to Phoenix. Wind was quite strong which made for pretty waves on the lake.

I know, don't keel over. I'm finally doing a trip report. I'm quite behind on my trip reports going clear back to October 2024's the Camino in Spain. Anyway, 1c1x Jaelyn is still in town after our Thanksgiving get together at her mom's house, so I suggested we get out for a hike. Not sure why I picked this one but it was a good choice, if I do say so myself  . Ambika and Mia were at Thksgiving too so we all decided it would be good to get out and hike together. We met at Red White and Brew and then took Tonto 3 to the TH. My Senior Pass worked so that was a nice, plus we found a parking spot that happened to be right next to the TH (altho we didn't realize it at the time).

We got rolling a little after 10:45ish. The temps were nice. There were lots of people coming off the trail at the start. Fortunately it did taper off after a mile or so; although, there were still lots of hikers of all sizes and dogs. It was really green out there, lots of grass too and some blooming plants and cactus. Everything looked fabulous and that, along with hiking near water, is always a little more special. The trail is indeed, rocky in places. However, for the most part, the tread was great as was the grade. A little trimming could be done; especially for us taller folks.

We wound our way along the lake fingers and went up and around a few times. At one area, we saw a faint sign, but it looked like the trail went down a gully so we went where it looked like the trail was going. We just ended up at a little beach; pretty nice spot. The other two come and say, you missed the sign. So back up we went and then down this rather steep gully to continue our way to the next sign that gave us the options of a cove or the shoreline; both the same mileage. We chose the shore and made our way there. 3 of us stayed above while Jaelyn, our goat, took the last little bit down to the beach and then hiked around the mountain. I don't think I've seen this part of the lake, except from the air.

We enjoyed our view while eating the Huckleberry Vodka Bison Jerky I had brot from Montana. There were about ten or more other hikers that came and went. Jaelyn checked out some of the cholla skeletons from time to time as we made our way back. We didn't run into as many people and dogs on the way back, but there were more than I thought there would be at 2 in the afternoon. We had one pretty good hill to climb (for me anyway) and Ambika led the way at a pretty good clip. At the top of one area, I reminisced water skiing back in March 1991 on the lake with my brothers; it was great fun. Continuing on, once again, there are a few fingers to hike around. We made pretty good time. We saw a few warning tickets on vehicles.

We went to the Marina for a late lunch that didn't look full, but apparently service was really slow. We ended up just going to the Red White and Brew. They have remodeled. Service was nice, but not good. We had a good discussion about the Romain farm/ranch legacy as our cousins grow older. Not sure we solved anything, but we have the roughage of a plan.

Wolfberries were prominent and many; very impressive.

With temps flirting with 90F, I was looking for someplace I could go that might be a little bit cooler, or at least have the ability to cool down. Haven't visited Saguaro Lake before, and the Butcher Jones trail looked short enough with maybe just enough variation in terrain to test and evaluate my ankle without bracing. Threw all my gear in the car, and got started a little later than I would have liked, but arrived to find the lot with only 5-10 cars parked.

Headed on down the trail, finding a few folk along the shoreline attempting to fish. Encountered a few others headed back out, and lapped a few groups on my way in. As expected, the terrain varied from well packed dirt to some more rocky patches. The trail is very distinct, as might be expected given its popularity. There are a few use paths that can be followed for shoreline access. Was surprised to pass through a mesquite bosque section, which would be even more enjoyable when the mesquite are leafed out. Followed the trail as far as I was willing to go - it seems the last part of the trail has fallen to disuse, and winds up disappearing into a mesquite thicket. On the way to the end point, there are some really nice views of the lake, the four peaks, and glimpses of the superstition ridgeline.

After picking my way through the mesquite for a bit, I decided to turn back...and was eventually slowed down by a steady stream of hikers coming the opposite direction. Happy to report the ankle seemed to tolerate the hike reasonably well, so maybe I can look forward to fading out my mismatched sock lines soon!

Once back at my car, I swapped out my gear and headed for the water for part two of my day. I can say that even though I had a decently close parking spot, I'm not used to portaging my kayak and gear quite that distance! Once I had everything situated, I launched from the beach and headed for the main channel.

By the time I was out on the water, there were a number of paddle boarders and a few kayaks out, along with a number of speed boats and fishing boats. After crossing the main channel, I headed for Willow Springs Canyon, paddling up until the water was too shallow to proceed before turning around and heading back towards the main body of the lake. Poked into the unnamed cove to the east, then headed up the Salt to pass an arch and Ship Rock to enjoy views of the four peaks near where I had stood on the shoreline while hiking the Butcher Jones Trail.

After catching a few photos, I made my way back towards the beach, slowing down to face into the waves whenever a speedboat passed without slowing enough to not leave a wake (which was often). (I'd learned early on into kayaking that I really don't like being caught laterally to a wake, especially with larger waves.) Wound up covering a bit more distance in the boat than on foot, and was getting a little tired towards the end.

Wildlife: Lots of waterfowl including coot and cormorants, great blue heron, great egret, and several others that I wasn't able to get a good look at. Also spied several lizards, numerous vulture, and a fast scampering ground squirrel. Also saw some fish in the lake.

Glad to have been able to visit during a weekday...I can only imagine how busy things get on the weekend! A friend showed me photos of a crested saguaro that he saw while on a Desert Belle cruise on the lake, but alas, I did not manage to see it (and also I definitely didn't cover the miles that those boats cover). It might be fun to see if I can find a way to paddle as far up the salt as possible, but I think that would require figuring out if I could access some of the other coves on Saguaro further up-lake...a quick skim of the internet leads me to believe some serious 4x4 would be required...so that's probably a nope for me, alas.

The lovely summer weather is nearly upon the valley. I opted for a quick/easy one on my neverending road to recovery. After weeks of PT, months of resting, I believe I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I arrived right at sunrise and there were a few vehicles in the parking lot, kayakers and another fellow hiker. The temps were very pleasant and the shade most of the way around made for very nice conditions. The trail is in good shape and has been maintained recently. I came across a solo hiker and then a group going in.

Feeling the temps going up and figured I had gone far enough, I turned around where the trail splits along the back side. On the way back to the TH, there was steady stream of hikers. Lot of other people had the same idea to hit this one before it got too hot. The parking lots of packed and there were a bunch of kayakers and boarders out on the water and setting up along the beach area.

Cloudless skies made for not as dramatic views as I've had in the past, but this hike is highly scenic regardless of the conditions. It's popular for good reason.

Fletch, Sue and I set out hiking around 0900
Not too busy yet
Made our way to the end of the trail, then down to the water access spur
On the return, Sue tripped on a rock and bit it, landing hard on her wrist and shoulder
Our visit to the ER confirmed her feeling that wrist is broken
Sucks for her vacation
Fletch was super helpful on our remaining 1.5 mile hike out
Stuff happens I guess

@The_Eagle invited me to join him and @Tortoise_Hiker on a hike along the Butcher Jones Trail. It's been way too long since I've hiked with either of them so I jumped at the opportunity.

With an early start, we just about had the trail to ourselves to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful lake. We took a few spur trails down to the water, which was calm, almost mirror like - the speed boats weren't out just yet. Wildflowers dotted the south and east facing hills. I had my first Owl Clover sighting. The usual suspects, poppies, lupine, scorpion weed, etc, were all present.

At the end of the official trail, we took an off trail route to create a loop. It wasn't exactly what Bruce drew up, but it worked out well. We had to bust through some brush to find a steep hill to climb so we could get up to a ridge, but the climb was short-lived. We topped out on peak 1942 and took a short break. It was gorgeous up there. After our break, we followed the ridge NNE until we intersected with Bruce's original route. Wild flowers were abundant on the ascent to 1942 and all along the ridge.

We closed the loop with a trek through a wash that brought us back to the official trail. While we had the trail to ourselves early, the last half mile was met with substantial resistance due to the scores of folks now on the trail heading in our direction. But that also passed quickly and then we were done.

This was a splendid hike and it was great to be out on this absolutely gorgeous day. Bruce and Denny, it was great to see you both again and it was great catching up. Thank you again for inviting me along.

Extreme in spots. Mexican poppies, Coulter's Lupine, Owl Clover, Scorpion Weed, lily and a few others that I cannot name were abundant on our off trail route.

Yeah! I got a hike in with Bruce and Ray! Bruce drew up a loop because they’re more fun than an out and back. 🤔 and he likes off trail 😁.
The trail part is in good shape and the off trail part was a… off trail. Most pokey stuff was avoidable.
Great weather, views, variety of flowers and cacti!
Lots of fun chitchatting and the company was top notch!! Thanks gentlemen for a very enjoyable outing! 🤗

Hooked up with Ray and Denny to check out the wildflowers around Butcher Jones Rec. area. We started hiking around 7:30 with only a handful of cars in the lot.

We checked out all the little spur trails on our way around enjoying the morning views. Next up, was the portion of trail that is no longer maintained. It is even harder to follow than my previous hike here last year. We opted to take the steep route up to Peak 1942. While it was a steep up, it had the highest concentrations of flowers for the entire hike.
[ youtube video ]

Up top, we followed the ridgeline to the northeast until we could make it gently down to the wash for our return.
[ youtube video ]

Back at the TH, the parking was full and they were even using the overflow lot. Many were on the beach, bathing suits on, trying to catch some rays. Speaking of Ray's.... this was the first time hiking with Ray in a couple of years. It was great to catch up. This was an enjoyable hike and spur of the moment route. Lots-o-flowers. Poppies, lupine, owl clover (even a white one), chia, fiddleneck, scorpionweed, desert chicory, goldfields, rock daisies, brittlebush and creosote.

On the drive out, between Butcher Jones and the Beeline, there were countless cars/people pulled over taking in the Poppies and wild horses. This has to be one of the premier spots in the state, if you want to see carpets of Poppies. If it was this busy on a Monday, I can only imagine how much of a zoo it would be this weekend.

Post-Christmas hike with the family. This is always a crowd pleaser. We arrived around 8:30 am and beat the crowds, though the parking near the lake was all full, as was most of the overflow when we returned. Proud of my 5-year-old grandson who made it the whole way!

I have not been out to Butch Jones Trail in a while and I thought it would be a good sunset hike. The weather was perfect for hiking. My #2 son and I started out and hiked a little past the western section. We would have missed the sunset if we went all the way to the cove side, so we turned around.

The sunset was nice, but it looks like the color show was further east. Still a great way to spend the late afternoon.

We made it back to the parking area just as it got dark.

Quick, easy, scenic, plus I get to spend some time with my #2 son who is normally in Washington State.

We hadn't don this hike since 2018, so decided we would go back to it. It is a nice hike, but you need to go during a weekday, first thing in the morning to avoid crowds. This was the day after the snow in the higher regions, so 4 peaks had a nice dusting of snow that made for some great photos.

Where to start with this? If you want to be around a lot of people, walk the Butcher Jones trail Saturday. So many people, it was just crazy. Not just ones and twos, but large groups of people. I literally saw hundreds of people out on the trail. I knew it would be busy but had no idea it would be as busy as it was.

There was a new string of geocaches along the trail which is why I made it out here today. That and to find another cache atop an unnamed peak on the south end of the trail.

For climbing the peak, I left the trail where there was a way across a wash, then worked my way up to the peak. My route was fairly direct though I skirted a few bluffs. It was fairly steep and the ground loose enough that on the return I followed the ridge line down so I would more easily avoid sliding on my back side.

Once back to Butcher Jones picnic area, I decided to walk up the OHV entrance to the Rolls to find another geocache. The gate was closed, so it was fairly quiet and was nice to leave the crowds behind.

I've lived in AZ since 1999 and never been to Butcher Jones Rec area, seen Saguaro Lake or even been on the Bush Highway. Time to rectify all of that.

I was the third car in the lot and started to a brisk, clear, calm morning. The sunlight lit up the surrounding cliff faces. The Butcher Jones Trail really is a gem with 1st class views. IMO best done early to take advantage of the morning light, shadows and reduced headcount. I checked out all of the little spurs, to get the different views of the lake. I didn't see any of the trash that others had talked about.

It's real easy to tell where the official trail ends and the use trail begins. After this point a GPS track and long pants would be helpful, but you are still gonna get scratched. It would be nice if they cleared this and turned this into a loop.

My next goal was to find my way around the North Shore checking out the fingers, beaches and coves.

On one of the beaches, there was a fire still smoldering, 50 feet from the lake... really. I pulled out the warm pieces and put them out in the mud. Everyone of the beaches was complete with assorted trash. I guess it's too hard to drive that stuff out.

There is a bit of up and down sticking close to the shore. When it made sense , I used some of the ORV roads to make my way to my lunch and turnaround spot at Hidden Cove. This is directly across from the Bagley Flat Rec Area.

I was sorta surprised, that on a nice weather Saturday, I only saw about 5 groups of ORV's in The Rolls.

I took a slightly different route on the way back to complete the loop. Back on the short section of the the BJT, the afternoon crowds appeared. The Butcher Jones Trail proper, would be a great close to town hike to take out of town guests to.

With the yearly blast furnace on the way, I figured it would be a good time to sneak in a quickie out on this cool trail. I arrived about 6am and there was already a good number of kayakers and water boarders setting up. Quite a few fishermen out near the start as well.

This trail is the same as always. Nice views of the lake at the first 3 viewpoints, then a turn towards Burro Cove. The trail needs a little trimming along a few sections, especially the first little bend where it dips down past Peregrine Point. But, it’s still a well worn and easy to follow path all the way.

I hiked out to the viewpoint of Burro Cove and then out to the “shore access” area by Ship Rock. This is where I came across the first hikers of the day. They were going back. Must have started at sunrise? I started back myself from here.

Going back at ran into more and more hikers. I’d guess 8-10 parties in total. The lake was getting busy as well. Tons of jet skis, power boats and kayaks/boards. As I turned the last little view area, I could see the beach at Butcher Jones was pretty full. Lots of people enjoying the beauty all around.

I finished up in just over 2 hours and managed to beat the heat. An excellent Sunday morning all the way around.
