I had Friday off and with all the percipitation we've had this season it seemed like the perfect time to do this hike. Got to the Jack's Canyon TH around 6am. Just in time for a brief rain storm to move through; even got a dusting of snow. Not sure how long it was going to last, I waited in my car for an hour while the system moved through. TH was very muddy which was a precursor of things to come. Got on the trail a little after 7am and started the long slog to "Dry" Beaver Creek. It was surprising how the condition of the trail changed along the way. There were stretches where the trail was actually fairly firm separated by long stretches of muddy or even stream like conditions. I exerted quite a bit of effort during those stretches trying to find the best, dryest footing available. Luckily, this is a fairly rocky trail with lots of opportunity to find relatively decent footing. There were 12 water crossings along the way. Nothing challenging, but all quite enchanting in their way. I could hear Beaver Creek long before it came into sight. The Woods Canyon trail, which parallels the creek is relatively flat and a bit removed from the creek, so though the creek was flowing strongly, views were limited. This trail was in good shape except for a rockslide about .5 miles in from the juncture. A boulder, about the size of a love seat took out a large tree and part of the trail. The positioning of the tree turned out to be more of an aid than a hindrance. Reaching the red rock ledge provided fantastic viewing opportunities. I sat for a bit, enjoying the solitude and took some pictures before turning around. |
