Something new for me. Enjoyable experience. Bout a mile in length. Lg pool of water in back after ladder. Very slippery and prepare to get muddy. Couple narrow spots upfront.

I forgot to start a triplog till a ways in. Was actually closer to 2 hours.

First time in Peppersauce and I was blown away! My friend and I hiked AZT #13 first and then headed down to Peppersauce for the afterparty. We arrived at the cave parking around 2 pm aaand happened to pull up at the same time as our new Central Arizona Grotto friends! Very cool. They had been to Peppersauce a few times and we were grateful to have friends with experience around.

Reflective markers have been placed throughout the cave to help with navigation but it was quickly obvious how easy it would be to get turned around in a cave if you were not prepared. The three light sources rule is an excellent one. We wore helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and gloves to keep our skin oils off anything we touch in the cave. Knee pads were necessary but the arm pads were mostly used in the initial entry/exit crawl. The rock inside the cave is smooth and easy to slip on in many places. There were a few areas that I would normally call a short "scramble" up or down rock but, with the smooth rock and strange cavey non-uniform spacing of everything, it was more just a series of awkward slide moves. Nothing too challenging though. Our friends' two six-year-olds did great with maneuvering over everything. The outside temp was cold but inside the cave was humid and kept getting warmer the closer we got to water. We arrived in the register room and all stopped to sign the register. The kids stayed in the main room while 2 people in our party went west-ish down a short slippery ladder and through the "rabbit hole". They returned and another couple of us went north down the tall ladder into the room with the main lake. It is incredible to see. The water is stagnant and probably not very clean to swim in but sure is beautiful to sit and gaze into.

There are truly no words to describe our experience exploring everything between the entrance and the register room. It felt like we were inside a dragon. So many formations looked like a giant spine. Then formations would turn into smooth bubbly face-melt streams overhead and then pockets of crazy ribbons of crystal. I did not expect how wild and incredible the formations inside the cave would be. We spent about two hours total inside the cave and did not venture off from the main route.

It seemed like there was a lot of graffiti in the cave. That sucks. Idk who could see something so out-of-this-world and decide it would look better with their crappy attempts at writing words or whatever they were attempting to do. I know there has been a lot of work put into removing graffiti from this cave so I don't want to diminish those efforts by saying there seemed to be a lot of graffiti. With no basis for comparison to the extent of graffiti before removal efforts, it did seem like there was a lot during our visit.

As we were exiting we met a young couple just entering and the guy said this was his first time back since he was little. Apparently, he took a trip to Peppersauce as a kid and said the experience always stayed with him & now he was returning with his girlfriend. It is a really special place and I hope people are able to recognize that and take better care so the cave remains accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Explored this cave with Dave on a nice cool day in the 60s. I rode my Suzuki dirt bike up from American Flag ranch and Dave followed me in his car. I've been to this cave several times but it was Dave's first time here. He was amazed at this place, and I really enjoy it every time. I always keep coming back once a year or once every 2 years.

In 2019, I was at this cave and saw a ringtail cat. We got some good video of that. I'll try to upload photos from both times.

Because of time constraints we weren't able to finish exploring the entire cave. Good luck on your date, Dave!

Since a co-workers wedding was cancelled(Fiance is in the military,) I told her I would take her and some friends on an adventure. Covid had everything closed in the Flagstaff area, so I came up with Peppersauce Cave. I told the younger group, I would bring sandwiches, snacks and pay for the fuel. They would have to go buy helmets. I didn't want to take chances on them hitting their heads. It payed off, they each hit their heads at least once. ](*,)
We spend about 3 hours inside the cave exploring. My buddy Ben and I, found a passage we missed on our last visit. I was impressed with how clean the cave was this trip. They had got rid of most of the graffiti and had posted reflective direction signs. Its hard to get lost in this cave. The cave was a little wetter than last time, so we had to watch our steps in a couple locations.
After exploring the cave, we decided to take the back way up to Mount Lemon for a late lunch. On the way up, we saw a few horses, deer and one stranded Ford. I ended up towing the Bronco the last few miles up and over Mount Lemon. The weather was a bit chilly on Mount Lemon. Being a holiday weekend, Mount Lemon was packed. There was a lot of traffic. He had a pizza lunch and drove around the top of the mountain enjoying the views. The drive down the mountain took a lot longer than I remember from past trips.

My first time ever being in a cave absolutely blew my mind and I instantly fell in love. After joining a caving grotto I was invited to go to Pepper Sauce on my first real caving trip. Gear was provided and with an excellent guide who showed us all the cool areas, we got to explore this huge cave. I had no idea what to expect and it just blew me away. It was so amazing and so beautiful despite the lack of formations.

I have since been in six caves and each has been harder than the last. But exploring underground is such a beautiful contrast to the highest peaks and I am proud to be able to get to see everything this world has to offer.

Please do not go in this cave without gear. If you would like advice for caving, PM me.

I was worried after having exhausted my family after a two mile bushwhack that they’d hate caving. But to my surprise nearly everyone loved it. I still don’t know if my sister did - she had one moment of claustrophobia but she managed to push through it. Special Thanks to my friend, Jeff, who provided amazing support during the trip.

First time back to the cave since December 2016. Graffiti has been cleaned up a lot, and reflective signs installed, pointing the way out.

Lots of folks exploring today, including several scout groups. I was happy to see one group had each of the boys with a bag to pick up trash. :-)

I explored a few new areas, including the “hell hole” off of the book room, and discovered a few more connecting pathways and alternate routes.

A fun time!

A friend and I went to check out Peppersauce cave. Neither one of us had been there before, so we took our time and explored as much as we could.
On they way home, we stopped off at Sasco Ghost town to walk around.

Opting for a little adventure for our annual family Christmas Eve hike, we decided to visit Peppersauce Cave--a first for our family. I spent a fair amount of time gathering information about the cave, since downloading a route was not an option. Visitor reports ranged from ... just wander around and explore; you can't really get lost, to ... don't go there without someone who knows their way around, or you'll likely get lost. Ultimately, I decided to try to find most of the features people referenced in their trip descriptions and hope for the best.

Turns out we were able to find all of the things on our checklist, though I'm sure there is a lot more exploring to be done, but probably not within the comfort zone of my family-friendly visit.

My $0.02 on navigation in the cave: The primary course of travel is pretty straightforward from the entry to the Big Room, which ends with ladders down to the "lake" on one side (to your right as you enter the Big Room), and to the Rabbit Hole (aka Birth Canal) on the other side (to your left as you enter the Big Room). On the way, we passed under the Arch, and passed by the two Columns (which we didn't actually notice until our return, since they are above the head and somewhat tucked back on a shelf that you have to look back to notice as you are heading into the cave).

After arriving at the Big Room, we descended the ladder to the lake and admired its clarity and depth, but weren't tempted to take a dip, as there were some "floaties" and I had read enough about bacterial contamination, etc...

After a few photos, we crossed the Big Room and then descended the second ladder to the Rabbit Hole. The bottom of the second ladder was the muddiest section we encountered. In fact, the cave was remarkably dry. There wasn't even any mud in the Rabbit Hole. And while we got plenty dirty, we didn't emerge caked with mud; we left with clothes in need of a good wash, but no temptation to just chuck them (as I understand many do).

After the Rabbit Hole, navigation becomes a bit more tricky, as the cave quickly splinters into a lot of offshoot with no clear "main" source of travel. We brought some glow sticks, which we found helpful in marking some points on our way in, to help on our return (retrieved them all--of course). There is a lot of graffiti in the cave; arrows and directional notes are everywhere (sometimes helpful for navigation; other times, contradictory; always, unsightly and misguided).

The Slide is the first feature we encountered beyond the Rabbit Hole, and is easily found. Beyond that, we wanted to make our way to the Book Room or Signing Room, but had little intelligence on how to get there. We made it ... through some trial and error.

From the top of the Slide, with the Slide to our back, we headed off to the left, along an extended crack on a significant slant. After about 30 yards or so a passage way opens up to the right. We followed it to a T-intersection and took another right. This led down a narrow crack that eventually forces you up what we later realized was the Spiral Staircase. At the top of the Spiral Staircase, we realized that we had taken a circuitous route, as we heard down below the voices of a couple in our group who had opted not to explore too far beyond the Slide. Upon close inspection, we realized that, from the Slide, we could have headed to the right and up to the top of the Spiral Staircase, for a more direct route.

Meanwhile, about halfway down the Spiral Staircase, is another offshoot that leads to the Book Room, with one belly-crawl section required. We signed in and checked out the contents of the book box, which included a full bottle of beer.

After signing in, we made our way back to the Slide area, rejoined the rest of our group and made our way out. Along the way from the Big Room to the entrance, we explored an offshoot to our left (facing the entrance), which led down to an area that looks like it is probably filled with water during wetter times.

All in all, we had a great adventure. Now that I'm more familiar with the setting, I look forward to returning to do more exploring.

Given that it was Christmas Eve, and we arrived relatively early (9:30 am), we had the cave entirely to ourselves until we met one other group in the Big Room on our return. As we were leaving, another car drove into the parking area. Otherwise, we enjoyed a lot of solitude--not something that is very common here on a weekend, as I understand.

On the way back, we stopped at the Peppersauce Campground, where we changed clothes, cleaned up a bit, and enjoyed the rope swing attached to one of the huge cottonwood trees!

A great trip!

A note re driving: The road in was well-maintained up to to the campground (despite warning signs that it wasn't maintained regularly). After the campground, the road was a bit more rough for the last 2 mi. to the TH, but still probably navigable by sedan, if careful--though high clearance would clearly be preferable. We expected the road to be more muddy, given that it had rained hard over the past few days, but we didn't have any problems.

I've lived in Tucson for 15 years and didn't find out about this cave until last year. I finally went in October and loved it. It is critical to bring plenty of headlamps, glowsticks, water, and I wouldn't recommend exploring this cave alone. It is recommended to bring kneepads for crawling through a few tight places and gloves as there can be some sharp edges in places. There were also some muddy areas when I went. There are plenty of markers, and colored arrows on the rocks which can be used for navigation. We spent about 2 hours in this cave and it was difficult to know how much of it we actually explored relative to what was on the map. I'll probably go back again soon!

A buddy of mine had been wanting to take me to Peppersauce Cave for a while, so we went after work on a monsoony afternoon. The cool air inside felt great. We went to the Big Room and the main lake, where I played time-exposure photography instructor to an eager learner. After a good hour, we emerged muddy and haggard. Good fun! My post-Peppersauce thoughts: this cave is beautiful, amazing and quite a bit bigger than I had always assumed; I want to hand out beatings to graffiti artists; and cave farts are deadly. Yes, I shall return here.

My first caving adventure, and the one thing I took away from it is that caving is a lot like canyoneering, with the added bonus of being perpetually lost. We had a group of five and made it through the cave in pretty good time. The cave was pretty warm the whole time we were in there, so a swim in the underwater pool ended up feeling pretty good.

Fun times checking out the cave, it sucks the walls are spray painted all over the place. Picked up a couple garbage bags full of trash. Left the place as clean as we could.

Decided to make a break for a cave on a hot Labour Day weekend, so rounded up a few friends for our collective first time in Peppersauce. I'd only been spelunking once before (lava tubes - much simpler!), but figured I'd read up on it in advance (easier said than done!) and expect to see lots of other folks in there enjoying the holiday weekend.

The drive was simple enough, and note that the access is attained by starting at the culvert and following the creek slightly uphill.

Once we'd sorted out our flashlights and spares, we began our way in. It was easy to be a bit nervous on the way in & ask directions from everyone that we passed, but the advice of "just explore!" that we got from one fellow was indeed the right way to go.

All told, we had a great couple of hours just exploring around the inside (and various side passages). Highlights included finding a dinosaur look-alike rock, me diving into a tiny little slot to explore a few feet off the main trail (much to the chagrin of my compatriots), and, of course, the lake. The only time we ran into many folks at the same time was back in what we thought was the Big Room, near both of the ladders. When we got back up from the first ladder and lake, though, all had headed out.

Wayfinding was slightly challenging (though 'out' bound signs made the exit much, much easier), and we just went with the flow. We were curious, though, where we were a few times... perhaps fodder for comments here or future expeditions?

- We found a second ladder (and some thin rope) just through a passage where folks had pointed us towards the Rabbit Hole. Where would that have led us? Did we actually not get back to the big lake? None of my group was up for venturing beyond that ladder :( :p
- Off the same room (to the left if looking at the Rabbit Hole Path), we found a passageway that ended in a ridge with very steep descents to either side. Is there any way to get down that? Seemed mighty slick!
- On our way back out, we found a long narrow passage on the left that eventually led down a non-trivial hill towards a small lake (the dino head was near here!). We didn't know whether that was the annex connection lake, or just the long side passage.

All told, a most excellent day caving!

EBK

Enjoyed this one again with a couple of friends.

This time I went a little farther than I did 3 years ago with Joe, Denny & Bruce. Made it to the first lake, then went through the rabbit hole and on to the library. On the way we passed the slide, and I got them both on it, sliding it 4 times myself :y:

Made it to the library, signed the logbook. All the books were gone except for a couple starting a few months ago. This time, after making it to the library, I took the opening to the right and followed it into another room with another couple of logbooks, one going back to 2013. In that room, off to the left, I saw there was a thin rope running down probably 50 feet and continuing on. I didn't do that as I had left everyone else in the library, but I do want to go back.

One of these days I'll find someone who can lead be back to the subway and the lake in the very back, that would be awesome. If anybody knows their way back, PM me.

This was my first time caving :y: I've been wanting to go for years, so this was pretty exciting. A friend of ours who had been to the Peppersauce Caves many times acted as our guide. I was glad she was there. I think we would have been pretty lost without her. I'd definitely say the scariest part was when we climbed over the wet, slimy ladder :scared: on the passage to the book room. I was terrified that I was going to fall! The long, narrow uphill section on the way to the book room definitely takes some endurance in the arms and legs and some patience. I'm pretty petite and I was feeling cramped 8-[ Overall, the cave was very cool and I plan to go back soon. I think I'll bring a trash bag with me, since there is a serious amount of trash (and graffiti) in the cave :yuck: .

Note on the conditions: It's pretty dry in there right now. There was hardly any mud at all since it hasn't rained recently. It was also pretty busy on the day we went. We ran into an obnoxious group of teenage boys that were throwing fireworks in main room of the cave [-X . Luckily, they didn't stay long. We also ran into several other groups who were much more considerate of the other people in the cave.

Vincent and I hit the hills again and ended up in Oracle, AZ with our noses pointed for Peppersauce Cave and oh what a time we had...

First off the drive down from Phoenix is lovely!! Ocotillo galore! Absolutely stunning section of the desert.
The cave is easy to locate, when you get to the end of the campground turn left, away from the "Rice Peak" signs. (Although part of me wants to explore over there too!!)

The cave is treashed and tagged and smells like moldy spores in certain areas, we packed out a backpack full of litter, well, what we were comfortable touching without gloves anyway!

We saw a beautiful batty bat, a cave myotis??? I'm not sure although there were pellet scat not runny white "pigeon poos" so I'm voting insect eater vs nectar drinker!
Vince will have photos up eventually so someone can correct me!

We entered the "annex" entrance first and yes we DID squeeze our tiny little selves far back past the last marks of graffiti! Once the graffiti ended we knew we were in the wrong place...

So we said goodbye to our batty bat friend and snuggled back through the tiny crevices out to the creek and back to the "map"...which is tagged up pretty bad, next trip I plan on taking some paint thinner or something to clea it all off!!

We didn't have a map with us ( ) but it's pretty self explanatory, we reached the two ladders and the rope but only found one lake and did NOT travel a full mile...we have plans for next time, will probably drag a bunch of you along with us as well!

Saw a female deer passing peppersauce campground, saw a male in velvet?!, saw tons of goofy cows, the batty bat, and a GORGEOUS display of butterflies! Monarchs, swallowtails tiny whispy ones i don't know the names for....I sat in awe of the flutterbies for quite a while and had tears in my eyes to see so many at once, it was fantastic!

Great day with a great friend at a great place and some great experiences!

Took five 11 year old scouts through the cave (went to the library and back). Took car which did fine (probably wouldn't if it was raining or rained recently). Learned that when you get to the T in the cave (literally the only T that I know of) both ways will take you to the library. Cave was mostly dry, everyone had fun going down the slide and through the birth canal. Would recommend bringing a garbage bag to help haul-out trash.
