I had not been at elevation in awhile, but I'd never had any problems up to and above 14,000', until this day. We hiked a slow pace, and my breathing was not stressed, but up around 13,000' I began to have some vision problems. At the peak I was light headed. My throat felt raspy... I wrote it off to a lack of proper training, until the next day. I had started a pattern of fever and chills that night... which continued through the next week; a nice case of flu!! Oh, well. Fortunately, the trip over included 11 days, so I would recover enough to log more hikes... I'll have to go back to score the rest of the outings; it is worth the trip. Mauna Loa offers what might be the toughest single day outing in the states... 2300' start up to nearly 14,000' with some ups and down in the mix...! 2015???

We cheated a bit on this one... We were on a tour of Mauna Kea, the highest peak in Hawaii and in the Pacific Rim. We were to enjoy the sunset from the area near all the observatories. Joel and I just couldn't handle that there actual summit was near by. So we jumped on the trail and headed to the top which is 13,796 ft above sea level. Mauna Kea is a volcano that has experienced some glaciation. So much of the volcanic rock has been pulverized into small pieces. This just enhanced that starkness of the peak.
