Wow!
What a great trip with Dixie's!
Our young Navajo guide, Caleb, was super personable, very helpful with photos, and even played his flute for us in the slot ... a very special experience.
I would do it again in a heartbeat - and actually now I want to visit Upper Antelope and maybe Canyon X too.

Third Canyon in five days. I did canyon several years ago with my mom and I wanted to share the experience with my wife as well. Due to the short notice we didn’t get an ideal time slot 3:30…. The more sun the canyon has to play with the better. That being said the temps were cool, walking through any slot canyon, (especially this one) is awesome and my wife loved the canyon! This is a fee guided hike that is shared with the masses. On this visit there were four groups of 13 going down with us. Went with Ken’s Tours again and they did a decent job of allowing us to enjoy the canyon and try to get that perfect picture.

The four of us kayaked from the Antelope Point marina into the lower portion of antelope canyon and back.

We were very impressed with the facilities at the marina and easy of access to the lake. Oh, and kayaking in a slot canyon was pretty neat too!

This was the first stop on my family road trip with my mom. We had reserved a spot at 9am so we just had to show up a half hour before the start. Amazing how much this experience has changed since Randal did it back in 2001. We had 13 groups of 10 in our 9am time slot! I would say that for every American there were at least 8 internationals. My mom and I were the only Americans in our group of 10. What a melting pot! Ken's Tour actually does a nice job of trying to allow everyone to get their pictures, pointing out some of the more iconic pictures, while still keeping the group moving forward. I will say my pictures were 50/50 whether I had people standing in the frame. Very cool experience, both visually and culturally. Will say, there are quite a few ladders involved with this hike and my mom, who is getting up there in years, was frustrated with some of the climbs. She made it, but I think it did detract (a little) from her enjoyment. Still, at the end of the day, we were glad that we did it :)

What an ordeal! Mrs. big_load and I were on our way back to Phoenix from Zion and took advantage of being the area to visit Antelope Canyon. We reserved a slot the day before and got to the TH an hour early with some hope of getting a better time. The day we picked (during Thanksgiving week) turned out to be the second busiest day of the year. We ended up waiting 3 1/2 hours as the schedule kept slipping, and all the groups later than ours were cancelled as sunset was looming.

The canyon was still worth seeing, and we got about 2/3 of the way through before the sun disappeared entirely, which was enough to appreciate the natural wonder. Perhaps as interesting as the canyon itself were our conversations with the Navajo guides and the overseas visitors while we waited. We got some nice pics of all the twists and turns, but somehow the final view from the top of the canyon capped it off. Watching people emerge one by one from a little crack in the ground was oddly mysterious.

Lower Antelope Canyon

The Antelope Canyon(s) have been on my radar since almost forever so finally I began working on a plan to visit them and bring home some of those fantastic photos that I keep seeing. I set up my trip for Wednesday traveling to Page, spend one or two nights (depending on my luck at getting a tour without prior registration) and returning Thursday or Friday. I left home at 0230 Wednesday and reached Page at 0730, just in time for the booth's to open their doors. Prior research led me to the lower canyon for the better photos with fewer visitors (yeah right). So I visited Ken's Tours and inquired about a Photographer's Only tour, only to find out that they were booked solid :( Next I went to Dixie Ellis' Lower Antelope Tours and they were able to get me in for the 2:20pm tour :D

I paid my $40 for the Photographer's Tour, $8.00 for the Navajo land access and went to find a campgrounds. I found a suitable camp at Page, Lake Powell Campground which came to $17.47 for one night. After getting the tent all setup, I took off to tour the Page, AZ area. First stop was Horseshoe Bend (to be covered in a later triplog) and then back to camp for a snack and a well needed nap

I made it back to the tours before 2:00 and checked on my reservation, all was still a go so I asked how many were on this same "Photographer's Only Tour" and was told that I was the only one on the list... :y: and introduced me to Andrea my young Navajo guide. I asked her a few questions about cameras and, to my surprise, she was very knowledgeable, and as it turned out, extremely helpful :o The trail to the canyon entrance was little more than a couple hundred yards then down a steep ladder system to the bottom, about fifty feet below the surface.

Before reaching the bottom of the ladder system, I knew I had died and gone to heaven!!!! All I could think of was "How am I ever going to describe this awesomeness to someone who has never been here?" I can only hope that my photos can do proper justice to the beauty that confronted me with each turn of my head. As I approached a good photo spot, I set up the camera/tripod and Andrea would clear the area of other tourists so that I could take my shots without having people stumbling around :stop: she was more than helpful, hell she even carried my camera bag for me :D

As we reached a pre-determined photo op, she would clear the area and explain what we were going to do at this location. Then she would pick up a handful of fine sand and throw it on a rock shelf that drained down through a slot or notch to create a sand-fall, like a waterfall with sand. There was formations that resembled a lions head, or a woman with her hair blowing in the wind, or a snakes head, and on, and on (like I said, she was very helpful). Andrea was also well versed on the geography and geology of the area and explained how the sandstone base was created over centuries of blowing sand containing various minerals that reflect light at different frequencies depending on the angle of the sun.

After the shortest two hours of my life we reached the stairway leading out of the canyon and back to the surface. Although my tour was over, I knew that I had experienced something that has plagued me for a number of years and now I had the evidence in my camera to show others just how incredible this planet can be :D

This is not a hike. This is not canyoneering. You will get more exercise on a trip to the grocery store. What you will get out of this experience is a chance to join hundreds of people from all over the world as the masses walk through a wonderful work of art, designed by nature and maintained, for your enjoyment, by Native American people. You will either love or hate your trip to this place. It is crowded, but beautiful. I brought back some cool pics that don't really tell the whole story. If you are a photographer who has an eye for composition, you can easily mislead your viewers into thinking this was a place of solitude and mystery.

My daughter and I stopped for the Antelope canyon tour, I am normally a "get away from the crowds" kind of guy. but even with the crowds this was more than worth it. We did the hour tour so we didnt have extra time shooting with tripods. All the photos I took were free hand. I put in 2 or 3 HDR photos for effect. It was a lot of fun editing the photos, quite a treasure hunt cropping and finding a finished photo that was nothing like what I intended when I took the photo.

I usually try to avoid touristy spots like the plague, and originally didnt want to take this tour but once it was all finished i was glad that i did pay the $28 to take this quick side trip on this amazing canyon. Our Navajo guide mentioned they kept this place secret for the longest time which makes me think that theres possibly other places such as this one that theyre keeping from the masses.....in one hand i think its great but in the other hand i want to see them too. I need a Navajo friend.

On our way back from Buckskin our group decided to make a quick stop at Lower Antelope Canyon. We paid 28 bucks and waited for our tour to begin. You start off with a Navajo guide and follow a path to the bottom of the canyon. There are a series of stairs near the bottom. Once inside we slowly made our way up the slot. Our group had 17 people but our guide did a great job keeping everyone together and pushing us forward. We took lots of pics of this stunning slot canyon and everyone in our group was satisfied with the tour. Give this a try if you're in the area and want to see a spectacular slot canyon.

Last day of our 10-day road trip through the States of the Four Corners. Began the day with the short and beautiful hike through the lower half of Antelope Canyon. The early morning light made for some nice photo opportunities. Sculpted rock, light and shadows -- every photographers dream. Luckily it wasn't too crowded so we got some good snaps and had a great time.

Decided to catch this on our way home from Zion NP. This is so beautiful. Yes, we were rushed through it and yes, I hate crowds. But wow, even with that it was still worth the time and $28/person. I would do it again - no question.
