Snow and rain today. First time on this trail that follows the river. Lots of moss, ferns and big trees.

Hiked to Rainy Lake. It is a steep trail. The lake is more of a pond.

A hike I do at least once a year so why not hike it as my first hike of the year. The trail is muddy and wet in places but that is to be expected. Overall it's in pretty good condition. Water-proof boots would be a wise decision. Hiked from the Middle Fork trailhead to the bridge at Dingford Creek TH and back. Saw a few people on the way in and tons of people on the way back. Easily had to passed 50 or more people. Parking lot was full and cars lined the street when I left. And this is January! The paved road is a great improvement but the downside is now it appears this hike is just as crowded as many other I-90 corridor hikes. No solitude here. Might have to start from the Dingford Creek TH in the future to find a little solitude on the trail.

We last hike this trail in July 2015 so this was our first time on the new route. While we understand the need to route it away from the river bank where erosion had created unsafe conditions, the new route loses a lot more riverside walking than we had anticipated. That being said, the trail was in great condition and the new trail actually shaves a little mileage off the hike. As others have noted, the paved road is so much nicer and while we thought that this might lead to even more crowds than before, it wasn't too bad out there today. Water is as beautiful as always. Sections remind us of the Siouxon Creek trail in southern Washington that was a favorite of ours.

Headed out to the Middle Fork today to get a good hike in, beat the heat and beat the crowds on a holiday weekend Friday. Two out of three isn't bad. While this hike provides a good amount of shade, it was still damn hot today. We hiked from the Middle Fork trail head to the next big bridge near the Dingford Creek trail head. The road in was in the best shape we've seen it -- and now the last mile or two is paved. Going to be nice when it's completed next year although it will probably mean more people on the trails. Today there was a mountain bike crew doing some maintenance but there is still a lot of overgrown areas on the trail between the campsite (roughly 3.5 miles in) until the falls (about 5.5. miles in). But the water is beautiful and it's nice and cool. Several people were swimming near the starting trail head and while we didn't swim, our feet did appreciate the cool bath at the end of a long day of hiking.

Beautiful day on the trail. We only hiked from the Middle Fork trailhead to Lower Cripple Creek Falls and back. Didn't go all the way to the Dingford Creek trailhead. Some frost on the trail so it was a little slippery in some places. A few blow downs but nothing too bad. All in all the trail is in great shape for this time of the year. It was actually drier and in better shape than the time we hiked it last March.

Cloudy start today but I don't mind clouds for river hikes -- that's why I picked this hike. Saw a work crew about a mile west of Cripple Creek Falls working but didn't see any others until my return trip (I went to the bridge near the Dingford Creek trailhead). Trail is in pretty good condition. There is some overgrowth and wash-outs, but overall the trail is in good condition which allows for a good pace if you want. Started to clear up a bit by the time I got back to the trailhead. I was surprised to find sunny skies in Seattle when I got home.

Somewhat dark and overcast to start out but the sun came out on our way back. Beautiful riverside hike with great mountain views. More than makes up for the 10 mile pothole filled forest road we had to drive to get there. Trail was pretty good condition. Pictures don't do the river color justice -- a beautiful green color. This hike will definitely be one we do at least a couple times a year.
