Belated post. This was the second hike of the day. After Chris dropped me off at the bottom of the Catalina’s, I drove back up and stopped at the Babad Do’ag TH. Somehow I had it in my mind that this was a shorter trail than it actually was, so I ended up cutting it short. I hiked in a little over 2 miles where the trail overlooks the dry wash. (I imagine if you are doing a loop with the wash this is where you would enter/exit). I was at a high point of a ridge, overlooking the wash to the west and the Catalina road to the east. Decent views. Kind of a nice viewing point.

Disappointed that I wasn’t able to finish, but I had a big hike planned for the 16th and didn’t want to jeopardize that one. Encountered a few more people than expected (9). No wildlife. Annoying….there was a pull off a little further up the road which apparently is a popular shooting range. I could hear the shots echoing earlier in the day when I was hiking with Chris. Felt like I was right on top of them when I was doing the Babad. I camped at the Molina campground and I swear I heard shots ringing at midnight ](*,)

Plan A was to hike to Ernie’s Falls, but Douglas Spring trailhead looked like Best Buy on Black Friday. I really didn’t want to park a half mile from the trailhead, so I diverted to Babad Do’ag. I saw flowing water from the highway, and somewhat spontaneously decided to scramble up the drainage and return via the official trail.

There was flowing water the length of the drainage, pleasant but not spectacular. I’m still rehabbing my shoulder so some of the rock scrambling was more interesting than I would have liked.

There are lots of nice lounging slabs and shelves with flowing water periodically throughout the drainage. I availed myself of a few to scarf energy bars and enjoy the scenery.

I had the drainage to myself (no surprise), and the official trail on the return leg wasn’t crowded either.

The weather was lovely, warm but not hot with an intermittent cool breeze. Nice way to spend a few hours.

Busy trail on Black Friday, but I started a bit late so most of the crowd was hiking out as I was hiking in. I had the end of the trail viewpoint all to myself since I got there right before lunchtime. It was the perfect place to contemplate nature... except for the sporadic stream of gunshots from the informal shooting range near Molino. Breezy at the viewpoint but I brought a puffy and it was actually quite nice. The creek was of course predictably dry.

The grass had burnt to nubs just before the viewpoint, entirely on the north/east side of the trail. Other than some low cactus that didn't fare too well, most of the vegetation looked set to recover quickly.

On the way back the wind picked up and about blew me off the saddle above the drainage. Once I got round the mountain it calmed down a bit. Saw more hikers coming up... must have been the post-lunch crowd.

Rudy and I headed out to check on wildflower. We were not disappointed; once again this trail is on full display. Density and diversity, it may actually be better in a week.

Splendid day for an afternoon hike. The sound of water from the creek was enticing a future scramble up the drainage sometime soon. There were patches of snow in the shady parts close to the ridge. The falls were going but not heavily.

Quick Saturday morning hike down in Tucson with Eunice, Jeffrey, and Boba. Nice flowing hike and in the shade up the canyon with an icy trail. Topping out, we sat along the creek that was flowing with cold runoff. Only downside was the incessant gunshots coming from up the canyon echoing off the canyon walls and down the trail.

Nice overcast morning. The trail is in great condition; looks like there was trail maintenance since the last time I was there.
Even saw a nice Gopher Snake on the way out.

I was planning on doing Agua Caliente Hill this weekend. I didn't have enough time on Saturday and things popped up in the afternoon of today. I decided I would find a shorter trail to hike in the time I had. Babad Do'ag popped out. It was a short trail, not too steep on the side of the Mount Lemmon Highway that I would always see a sign for when driving up the road.

I packed a banana and 2 liters of water. I got to the trailhead. It was insanely windy (no good). I made my way across the relatively empty highway and to the trailhead. The trail was fun at first, immediately getting steep with the first little portion of it being just granite slabs. I continued on through the tall, dead grass on both sides of the trail, the wind staying consistent. I saw a lady with a puppy and as I was saying hello the puppy ran up to me and licked my face. Oh well. I made my way over to the part of the trail closest to Peak 3998. I decided to go up it, only being about 100 feet away and practically seeing a trail to the top. I got to the summit and it was unbelievably windy. Standing on top of the summit rock it was even windier. Fun.

I got back to the trail and started moving again. I went through more grassland until I got to a little side trail. Going down it for a couple feet lead me to a very nice view of Molino Canyon. Continuing up the gradual switchbacks I made it to a turn in the trail and the shadow of the ridge above took over the trail. The wind relaxed into a breeze. The trail sort of "wiggled" from back and forth as it continued. There were a couple oaks and other types of trees along the trail which made it even better. I made it over to a ridge again. Met by the sun and therefore the wind. I went up a side trail to a peak. It offered some pretty good views of Molino Canyon and the Babad Do'ag drainage. I looked up at Peak 4780 thinking, "I could hike that." I didn't have all day so I didn't. I made my way to the end of the trail.

At the end of the trail I sat down, had some water, and had a banana. After doing that I headed back. The initial part heading back was a bit steeper and harder than I remembered coming up but I made it through. I don't have a lot to say about heading down. I made it to the trailhead and finished up the hike.

This trail was a lot of fun and very rewarding for it's milage and elevation gain. :D :D :D
