You can't do the Pacific Northwest for the 1st time ever, and not do the Columbia River Gorge. For a water baby like me, it's a no brainer to spend some days chasing waterfalls. I came down the night before and found a dispersed camp above Hood River in a MTB Park. Got up pretty early the next morning to hit this iconic waterfall and hike. I was like, the 20th car in the lot so I was happy to catch the bottom viewpoint with hardly any people. Overcast at the start and windy, if you stopped, it was a bit chilly and rain threatened. But as the day wore on, the sun finally made an appearance and I could shed a layer or two.

It's been quite a while to put it mildly, since I've done more than 2 or so miles and had any elevation gain at all, but with no more limitations now, other than being out of hiking shape, I decided to really go for it and put on my regular day pack with about 25lbs plus the camera gear. While I didn't regret it, it did make things a tad harder and longer  I also found that my confidence needs a boost as some of the trail had a little exposure that I wasn't used to and I felt like a sissy at times. But the only way to get over it is to keep on keeping on.

6 Waterfalls, Spring Flowers, Spring Greens, Moss, Trees, and Water everywhere made for a photographic journey I could barely imagine. At only 6 miles, it still took me most of the day. Sometimes it did feel good just to sit and unload the pack.

A few changes to this trail. I had looked up the Wahkeena Falls to Multnomah description before hiking and there was a difference that added mileage to that one. The cutoff/shortcut that took you to a viewpoint before you re-intersected the main trail is closed. You have no choice but to take the upper trail of the loop. They are still having a hard time with landslides since the 2017 fire. There were places even on the main upper trail around Fairy Falls where it looked like they were constantly rebuilding and shoring up the trail. At a couple of points, they hadn't really fixed the trail yet, only mitigated the damage so you could get through. A few steep spots, sliding on the butt or carefully working your way down a dirt slope.

It was a great day. While I was pretty exhausted by the time I got back to the truck, I felt good about being able to do this one. And yep, with everything I encountered on this hike, it's a big, fat, photo bomb. I'm also including a few pics from my arrival and my camp. It could have been way worse, trust me. Even after several deletion passes I kept over 400 photos from this hike alone. :y:

Headed up to Portland for a niece's wedding and did a little exploring while in the area. Multnomah Falls is clearly a popular highlight of the area. An advance permit is required for parking.

I ended up hiking up to the top of the falls, where there is a recessed platform (not visible from the observation deck below, or from the bridge). As with all waterfalls, the most impressive views are from the bottom up, and this is no exception. Indeed, the view from the top platform allows very little in the way of views of the falls. It does allow you to see across over the Columbia river. But, for most (including everyone else in my group), the steep climb in a short distance is probably not worth the exertion, unless ....

I saw that there are some great loop hikes possible from here (see photo), including one that passes by 4 additional waterfalls. If you have time to do that, then the climb up is certainly worth it. If I end up going back again, I would set aside time to do that.

Hiked up to the bridge above the lower falls. Pretty much the only hiking I did on this week-long trip but that's okay, that wasn't the point of the voyage.

Following my niece's wedding reception at the lodge, we hiked up the trail a ways past the bridge, but too cold for my daughter to continue. Crowded as usual for a weekend. :)

Quick stop on the way back after the soggy Pumpkin Run.
Trail past the lower bridge is closed with no ETA on re-opening after last fall's fire.

Still worth a stop, though.

I hadn't researched this before heading out to the Gorge, so I was disappointed to learn I wouldn't be able to do one of the loop hikes. Everything is closed due to the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, except the paved trail to the bridge below the falls. In fact, even highway 30 is closed, and the danger from fire-damaged landscape above makes it seem pretty questionable as to exactly when they will reopen any of it.

Nonetheless, it's a pretty cool waterfall and I'm glad I managed to loiter for almost half an hour.

Signs claim it to be the 2nd tallest year-round waterfall in the US. It doesn't say what the tallest one is, and any research on the subject totally contradicts that claim anyway.

Beautiful day, partially cloudy and in the upper 60s. Started at 09:20 with the intention of checking out the forest road by Devils Rest. Made good time on the way up, decided to jog on the way back. Found a cool waterfall I want to go back and photograph.

The signature fall on the Historic Columbia River Highway was slammed on a Monday morning. The hike was advertised to me as an amazing waterfall with coffee available at the base. I naively pictured a woodsy coffee shop nestled in the forest with some older-type keeping the brew fresh. My dream quickly cleared when I saw the swarms of parents in tow behind emotional toddlers barreling towards the sweets shack.

The hike is paved the entire way up and then turns into a wide dirt trail on the slight descent to the top of the falls. Switchback posts count to 11, although it's a welcomed surprise that switchbacks 10 and 11 are on the descending side to the creek that narrows to the main falls. Excellent stop off the byway for a waterfall that can be seen from across the river in Washington.

Walked to the top of the falls with friends who were up from Arizona. Lots of people on the trail and on the road. Get there early (even on a Monday) in the summer to beat the crowds!

70 degrees out. 37% Humidity. Sunny. Began at about 10:30am. Total Time: 2:59:22

Started from Multnomah Falls and jumped onto Gorge Trail #400. Then followed the elevator shaft route up the talus slope towards Multnomah Basin. Hiked out to Cougar Rock, swung by Nesiksa Lodge, then followed Multnomah Basin Rd back to Larch Mountain Trail and back to the base of Multnomah Falls.

Fun hike. The trail along the fire escape route isn't too terrible to follow. I lost the "trail" several times, but just kept aiming uphill until I intersected it again. Fun, rewarding way to get to Multnomah Basin and skip the hoards of tourists along the main trail. Felt good at the top, so I jogged all the way back from Nesika Lodge.

My initial plan was to hike Multnomah Falls to Larch Mountain, but I changed my mind last minute and decided to do a loop on Franklin Ridge instead.

The initial part of the hike was crowded as usual- too many tourists with children and small dogs strolling along the trail. Once past the overlook, the crowds thinned dramatically, and after I passed the turn off to Wahkeena Falls I had the trail completely to myself.

The section along Multnomah Creek is beautiful- with more cascades and waterfalls than I expected. I'm already planning on heading back up with all my camera gear to photograph the creek.

after traveling farther down the gorge to almost hood river for another hike only to find out that access was too snowy for my parents' vehicle, i decided on my usual wahkeena springs loop from multnomah falls - a great plan b.

when i started out, it was raining, but as soon as i got to the lower bridge near the trailhead, the rain stopped.

lots of folks on the trail with it being just a couple of days after christmas, and these people were in all manners of dress. it made me chuckle to see a woman in a sweater dress, tights, and hiking boots. there were others in shorts, some in winter boots without any traction. above the overlook, the trail was super slick and with plenty of snow, so these choices dumbfounded me up there.

i ended up not doing the full loop since i didn't have much daylight left, and i had left my yak trax at the parent's house.

i always like it when the roar of the highway gives way to the roar of the falls. what a great day.
