Pleasantly surprised by this mountain range! Spectacular cliffs and spires. No closeups of palms here but could see them in the distance. We went much further, to where the boulder hopping and route finding reached a point where it was impassable without a struggle and lots of extra time.

i think the wind wasn't quite as harsh on saturday as it was on friday or sunday, but maybe that was just because i didn't have to set up or take down the tent. or maybe it was that i got to spend 24 minutes in this canyon.

In all my years in AZ i never got to go to the KOFAs and what an amazing place this was. This is the perfect time of the year to explore this remote and waterless place. Palm Canyon was one of the coolest little oasis' i have ever had the chance to see.

I needed a relief from self-quarantine so I decided to take a little road trip. I figured I could not infect or be infected from my car and a few hours of open highway driving sounded therapeutic so I set out for KOFA. The I10 was pretty empty (although busier than I had anticipated) and made for a nice, long, leisurely drive out towards the CA border. The real winner for the drive was heading down 95 from Quartzite to the turnoff for Palm Canyon in KOFA. I really enjoy that road and it was even nicer with the reduced traffic-- pretty much just me and the couple hundred butterflies smashed into the grill of my car.

Palm Canyon was nice as ever. Quick, easy, and peaceful. I saw a handful of other folks out there but everyone did a pretty good job of keeping their distance.

It is not often that I can look back at a hike where I spent 5X longer on the highway than I did on the trail as a good day but this was thoroughly enjoyable all around.

Spent the night camped at/in Skull Rock down off Queen Canyon Rd with my daughter and decided to make Palm Canyon the first hike the following morning. Beautiful morning and really cool to see Arizona's only grove of native palms. This one had been on my HAS wish list for many years but was never willing to drive 2-3 hours out into Kofa just for this brief hike. In the end, I got to check this one off my list with the help of my 8-year old daughter (and favorite hiking companion) so it was that much better.

On our way back to Phoenix from the Parker Strip area, we made a detour to come see the only native Palm trees in the state. The Kofas are an impressive sight, and you get a great view of them as you drive to the base of Palm Canyon. The trail is rocky and kind of steep in parts. As we were hiking in, I was looking everywhere for the palms, not realizing that what you hike to is actually just a viewpoint of the palms in a side canyon. Of course, you could opt to scramble up that side canyon to get up close and personal with the palms, but we opted to just observe from afar today. From the photosets here, it appears that we observed far fewer palms than what previous hikers have seen, which makes me wonder if they are disappearing, or if we just weren't close enough to see what was truly there. We could see about 20 - 24 palms pretty easily, but some of the photos here show what looks like at least twice as many.

After the short detour, we continued on our way back home.

Left Quartzsite about 10:30 for the trailhead. Up the trail and at the trail view point too early for the best light. Headed up the chute on the rightside. As we were returning the trail, wife's cell phone began ringing in her backpack. WHAT! cell service in this remote tight side canyon. Yup she is talking to our son in Phx. Light on the Palms was better on our way out.

Started with an early morning ascent of excellent Castle Dome Peak on a very well-cairned and established route that's better than a lot of official trails I've been on, with some fun scrambling and 3rd class near the top. Then Palm Canyon, short and interesting. Then Signal Peak, another good climb to a big summit, also follows a well-established route.

Visited Castle Dome Mining Museum the previous day, its well worth the $10 and a couple of hours.

Last time I was here, I was totally drained after hitting the same two peaks we did today. BobP found the way up while I got caught on a climb that I was too tired to attempt comfortably. Today I knew to take the uphill canyon to avoid the climb and made it up to the palms with no problems at all. It's such a unique thing to see here, and I'm glad I made it up to the trees.

Apparently the USFWS Ranger is not a big fan of my driving. :oops:

After doing Signal Peak and 10 Ewe we all headed over and did Palm Canyon. Once past the main canyon with the palms, JohnLP and I continued up the trail for a good ways. We found another canyon with Palms in it and climbed our way up into it. Brushy was the name of the game here but we made our way through without issue. This particular canyon had three palms and a large crack full of chock stones. Very cool area indeed.

This hike has been on my list for quite awhile. Finally was able to do it with my wife on our way home from Lake Havasu. The area is beautiful out there, though the hike is very short. Hike itself was ok. Worth doing if you are in the area, but not, in my opinion, a drive just for that hike. However, there is a lot of potential for off trail hiking. The area is beautiful. Looks like it would be quite fun and very challenging to get to the top of the mountain in which the Palms are nestled.

The timing was perfect with the sunlight hitting the side canyon. A few little scrambles were required to get up there, and this area is definitely worth the visit. Plenty of other people on the trail, too.

Nothing new can be said about this trek, but I do believe Scott and I were lucky enough to be there in the afternoon while the sun was in full contact with the canyon. The light bouncing off the top of the palms was amazing to see once we climbed to and above the palm level.

Well thought it was about time I did this one. I took advantage of a conference I was attending in Yuma to divert my drive back to Phoenix up 95 and into Kofa. A coworker, also a hiker, came with me, and we were the only two there late afternoon on a Friday.

The hike really is straightforward unless you want to hike UP to the palms, which we did (just about). We started the hike late, and got up quite high, but the rock was very loose and we thought, well we saw the palms from below and they're just palms LOL. I do recommend a hiking pole. We tried the route to the right (thanks @chumley) and it was walkable with a few hand holds needed.

With that, we turned around and finished. Great weather!. If we had been an hour earlier the light would have been perfect to see the palms in the sun. See my pics.

Although I have a few palms in my yard, they are imported. The ones in the side canyons of Palm Canyon are native. After summiting Summit Peak(no not the awesome technical pinnacle), we stopped here to check things out. We did what any tourist would do and grabbed a brochure and headed in search of Washingtonia Arizonica or Washingtonia filifera depending where you get your information from. We got to the palm sign and looked left. Yup they're palms. We sauntered up the canyon a little ways and saw a couple in side canyons and then went back to the motherlode. I'm glad I had my Merrell barefoots on; otherwise I may not have made it with my sole less brooks. There were 2 climbs and then it was just bouldering huge boulders. I made it just shy to the top of the canyon 3 solid contour lines up or about 600ft and counted 33 palms plus a couple babies and a couple downed ones. In 1986, I read somewhere that they counted 42. The scars from the 1954 fire were evident on most of the large palms. Cool side trip. Never did get to drink that beer under the palm with someone fanning me with fronds.

After bagging Summit peak, we decided to relocate for the next day's adventures, and along the way stopped to visit Palm Canyon.

Nice area, but after three days of hiking peaks off-trail, I was a little tired, and ended up turning back at the second climb trying to get up to the Palms. I tried three different attempts, and actually ended up well above where I needed to be, but wasn't able to traverse over safely. My legs were totally spent. So I accepted defeat and headed back to the car.

On the way I looked back up to see Bob on his way back down. Though he made all the climbs on the way up, he informed me that there was a parallel canyon to access the palms without any climbing required.

It was getting dark and we had a camp to set up, so that'll have to wait until next time for me. Oh well.
