| no partners | | I headed to Mt. Hood planning to hike to Mirror Lake, but heavy clouds started to roll in. Knowing that I wouldn't get the opportunity to take in the views of Mt. Hood from the lake, I decided to detour to Ramona Falls Trail instead.
I didn't know if the trail would be open when I arrived. The bridge crossing the Sandy River was washed out last month when a flash flood killed a 23 year old hiker. With the summer ending so soon, I doubted the bridge would have been replaced. As I headed up trail, I inquired with a couple that was headed back and they confirmed my suspicions- the bridge was gone. However, they informed me there was a log crossing in place just upstream of the bridge that wasn't too tough.
When I arrived at the log crossing, there were already two girls in the process of sliding their way across the logs instead of trying to walk them. While not the most stylish technique, it looked safer then trying to walk across- so I opted to copy them .
I kept pace with the girls for the much of the remainder of the hike to the falls. But for some reason they stopped 100 yards short of the falls and headed back to their car...? I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of my hike- why would they quit when they were so close to the end? By the time I got back to the trailhead their car was gone, so I guess I will never know. |
