Requiem for a Park

It was right on time when I rolled into the parking lot at Homolovi. Jody was already there, but no one else. The wind was blowing from the south and clouds were low and dense. A fitting day to observe the demise of a park. I went into the Visitor's Center to see the rangers packing things into boxes with no lights on. Grim atmosphere. 40% all books and art to get it to move. I had planned to pick some books up later in the day, but it didn't end up happening. Back in the parking lot it was still just Jody and myself. "How long should we give them?" she asked.
"It's 10. Let's do it."
We drove to the north end of the park where Homolovi II is located. We made our way up the paved path under gusty breezes, and then branched out on a lesser-known trail to a canyon filled with petroglyphs. The wind died down and we enjoyed poking around, looking for signs of ancient inhabitants. Back on the rim the wind was back at full force as we hiked back over to Homolovi II.
We spent two hours wandering the ruin and looking at the incredible artifacts. We both commented on how all the amazing things we were seeing would no doubt be snapped up by the lazy and greedy as soon as the park shuttered on the 22nd. :(
Finally sherded out, we headed back down the road to an unassuming knoll, where we poked around and found some old 'glyphs. Nothing else caught our attention, however, so we hit the road again for the Twin Butte area.
We found very odd and enigmatic 'glyphs around the Twin Buttes saddle area, but not much else until the Surprise Boulder. We turned the corner on a knoll and surprise! there was a boulder decked with clear, crisp petroglyphs. A few minutes later Jody came across a nice, large corn cob. But was it ancient, or a cast-off KFC leftover? Not for us to guess.
The weather was growing progressively gloomier but we decided to follow a tip Jody had about some more rock art to the east, but the hail and the dubious directions put the kibosh on that idea - this time. We parted over the roar of semi-trucks and bid a sad farewell to beautiful park, too little known and too little loved; abandoned by the state. RIP Homolovi Ruins State Park. I hope you can rise again.

Thanks to PageRob for organizing this one! The guy is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to pottery and he had some inside information. The day was gloomy, but the rain held off until midafternoon--enough time to search for glyphs and sherds around the park. Many of the glyphs are faint, but Surprise Boulder at the end of the day was worth the hunt. The amount and variation of pottery sherds is overwhelming--I'm sad to think of the looting that is going to happen now that our bankrupt state has made the decision to close the part. But, hey, the politicians have their "pet" projects (like NAU's branch in India) to spend our money on...

On the way home, near the Walnut Canyon exit on I40, I glimpsed a large bird in the median, very close to the road--not flying away from the traffic. I took the exit, circled back, and stopped to see what had happened. It looked to me like an immature golden eagle. The bird couldn't extend its wings to fly--it may have been clipped by a car or truck. I took a couple of pictures, then watched it hop/flop up the median to the trees. I called the Game&Fish hotline to report it and I hope they were able to send someone out to find it before it got hurt worse.

AAS Homolovi State Meeting - Winslow AZ

La Posada Hotel
Hubbell Trading Post
Homolovi Ruins
Chevelon Ruins
Chevelon Creek Canyon/Steps

The Arizona Archeological Society State Meeting was recently hosted by the Homolovi Chapter in Winslow AZ. This allowed an excuse to book a "base camp" room at one of my favorite hotels - La Posada.

Checked in mid-evening on the Friday and decided to explore the various artifacts and art works crammed into every nook and cranny of La Posada. Concluded the evening with a night cap and snack at the Turquoise Room.

The AAS State Meeting began Saturday morning at the recently restored Hubbell Trading Post. Lynn scored a coveted raffle prize - "Hopi Katsina - 1600 Artist Biographies" by Gregory Schaaf. The luncheon speaker was Susan Secakuku - Project Manager for the Homolovi/Hopi Project. As a member of the Butterfly Clan, Susan provided both a cultural perspective and administrative perspective of the Hopi - Homolovi connection.

Saturday afternoon offered a potpourri of field trip choices. Lynn and I opted to join the Chevelon Ruins field trip led by Kenn Evans from the Arizona Fish & Game Department. Kenn is a life-long resident of the Winslow area and provided incredible insight into not only the Chevelon Ruins, but the myriad of satellite ruins all located within line-of-sight of each other up-and-down the Little Colorado corridor. Kenn speculates that the Chevelon Site represents a trading cross roads per the rich variety of pottery sherds originating many miles away from all points on the compass. Note that the Chevelon Site is closed to the public.

Kenn then took the group south to the Chevelon Creek Canyon to view some of the petroglyphs panels. I was somewhat familiar with the area having visited the nearby Rock Art Ranch sites (check out [ Rock Art Ranch ] ) but unaware of these hidden gems.

We returned to La Posada for a quick shower and change of clothes before rejoining the AAS State Meeting at the Casa Blanca Mexican Restaurant. Saturday evening keynote speaker was Dr. E. Charles "Chuck" Adams, Director of the Homolovi Research Project.

Sunday morning field trips included many of the Homolovi State Park sites. Had to cut this short - plane to catch to Minneapolis.

If "In Search of Old Ones" speaks to you, check out an Arizona Archeological Society State Meeting sometime soon...

What an amazing place; both Ely and I are kicking ourselves for not checking it out soon. Decided to drop in and sneak in before the proposed closures. Checked out Homolovi I and II, but didn't get to do any off-trail stuff or see the 'glyphs! I hope that something besides complete closure is able to be worked out - I really need to get back out there and see more!

Didn't get very far, as had the kids with me 8-[ Able to see Homolovi II, as well as a site that was being excavated by a team of archaeologists who had received a grant from National Geographic. Did a dig for 5 weeks, and alas, if you didn't see it already, it's too late, as the team's last day was July 14, and then they covered the ruins all back over with sand to protect them ... They did find some interesting stuff out there.

One of the archaeologists on the team told me that they selected the location by (1) looking for saltbushes and scattered pottery on top of the ground (saltbush plants can only grow where there is deep sand, which would have been deposited over time after being dug up...they can't penetrate the harder dirt that's originally been there) ... and then (2) by sticking electric probes into the ground and running electricity between them (when the probes conduct better, it's because of a mineral in the original packed earth there; electricity won't go through the sand as well).

Hope to go back again later, and do all of the trails there...

Difficulty: 1  (out of 5)

Tracing the Beale Wagon Road through the remnants of the Mormon settlement of Sunset Crossing. Reference http://www.pr.state.az.us/Images/Sunset%20Fort%20A.pdf

The remains of the Sunset Community Cemetery are located close to the Homolovi State Park Visitor Center. The Mormon settlement was established in 1876 and abandoned in 1888. Remains of the mill, dam, and other buildings were all washed away during a major flood of the Little Colorado River in 1933. Google "Lot Smith" for more information...

First Hike! Took the family to the ruins and followed the path for Homolovi II. Then on the way out we stopped at Tsuvo. The kids and I hiked around this loop and took a few picture atop of the rock mesa there.

With Lynn. Used this as a jumping-off point for our first visit to Petrified Forest National Park.

Stayed at the La Posada Hotel in Winslow AZ (highly recommended). Considering the weather conditions on the day we visited, this isn't just a recommendation, but a must! This recently restored historic railroad hotel was the favorite project of architect and designer Mary Colter. Dinner at the hotel's Turquoise Room Restaurant may be the best combination of price and culinary experience in the state. Check out http://www.laposada.org/ for more information. Great for trainspotters or history buffs...
