| no partners | | I was returning from Laughlin and saw that this was a “short, steep hike” so count me in. I don’t believe the turnoff is marked “Old Kingman Highway” as stated in the hike description. I was looking for that two days prior on the drive there, but never spotted it. In any event, it is the turnoff between mile marker 8 and 9. I was expecting a trailhead, trail or something, anything and was confused where to begin. For some reason, I was thinking well defined trail, top half of Squaw Peak, but that is not the case at all. Just park wherever and head for the top, whichever way you go.
I parked about a quarter mile down the road, decided to walk back towards the highway (still looking for a TH) and just started up the adjacent drainage. Made it to the southwest ridgeline and followed that to the base of the “mountain”. Headed up the southwest side, sometimes using all fours as that seemed easier in some places. Swung around to the eastern side, thinking it might be a little less steep over there, but really wasn’t. Made the top and headed back down. Really no good way to go up or down, just do whatever works best for you. I was scree sliding in a couple areas, which was a lot of fun. Returned to my vehicle in the nearest drainage, ultimately making a loop.
I was thinking workout hike when I stopped here, but this is more of a mini adventure. |
