Drove to TH parking lot. Trail follows shoreline for about 1/2 mile and takes you behind the beautiful Hyatt Resort. Continues East along the rocky elevated shoreline. Hard to stay on main trail as there are many secondary trails to get closer to shore.

Light rain off and on the whole time. Between rain and high humidity we were soaked at the finish. We’d done this hike before but it’s a long time.

This trail is also called the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail. We started this hike next to the Grand Hyatt. There are a maze of trails leading along the coast in a northeasterly direction. One can either hike right along the sides of the coastal cliffs or a bit further back. There are several nice areas to explore, small beaches, some sand others lava rock. If the surf is active then in many places there are geysers of sea water when the larger waves contact the rocks.

Just over half way into the hike the trail passes along an ancient fishing temple (heiau), Hawaiian sacred grounds. Then runs smack into a golf course (modern Hawaiian tourist's sacred grounds?). The trail continues on the edge of the cliffs, if you keep looking to the right at the great view you'll never know the golf course is even there. After the course it continues to Mahaulepu Beach, Kamala Poin and Kawalloa Bay.

We saw sea turtles swimming along the base of the cliffs on our return.

Also on the way back we were able to watch tourists cliff jumping the 35 to 40 foot cliffs into the ocean. No way!

Judy and I parked on the street just West of the Diamond International Resort that is not far from the Hyatt. Various trails along the cliffs but you can't go wrong as the shoreline is always on your right. Walked through the Hyatt grounds and followed the coastal trail until we got to the stable then turned around and headed back. Very beautiful scenery...would recommend if you are in the area. Estimated mileage.

Started at Hyatt TH to makauwahi cave trail. Gorgeous, untouched set of cliffs and huge waves. saw lots of whales in the ocean. This area is in Poipu(southern side of Kauai). Several miles of undeveloped shores and lithified cliffs.Tons of exploration to do :y:
