This is a great area to explore on a mountain bike. The Arizona Trail #33 going through here is known to many, but for my skills (or lack thereof) it is often too steep. The Rio de Flag section, and some of the unnamed spurs I followed (see GPS route) were easy and not too techy for me. The Bow and Arrow Trail is very fun, especially heading east on it.

I started at Sam's Club parking lot and within less than 10 minutes I was out of the city and heading down a meadow with the Rio going through it. I had gone here the day before, and decided to come back and explore it further. I briefly dipped a little bit onto the Flagstaff Loop Trail, which is also a bit hard for me. I need to get some bike time, because I used to be a little bit better rider than I am now.

I looped back along the AZT, which I had to get off and walk, both uphill and down, several times. Then I turned left (west) at the big pond with the ducks, and followed the Bow and Arrow Trail to Lonetree Road. I reversed direction, and now the Bow and Arrow Trail, with a slight downhill slant, was a blast! No photos from that one, maybe next time. I was too busy riding fast.

This is not a place I will go on a weekend. I saw a few people, mostly on bikes, but I suspect it's busy on weekends due to its proximity to town. There are still sections I haven't explored yet.

Pulled out the mountain bikes and headed onto the Flagstaff urban trail system from right behind our hotel. Meandered through NAU's south campus and eventually into Sinclair Wash. Flag has a beautiful trail system!

Eventually, we headed under the I-40 overpass and then hung a left at the Rio de Flag "pond" onto the Arizona Trail, which immediately smacks you in the face with a 600ft climb at 13% grade. After that, there were some ups and downs, but mostly down towards Sandys Canyon, where we reconnected at the base of Fisher Point with our hiking adventure of the day before.

We initially decided we'd try mountain biking up the 1.1 mi. trail to Fisher Point, but quickly realized it was a little more technical than our present bikes and skill level were comfortable with. So, we stashed the biked and hiked up to the point.

A nice vista of the forest and the open meadow in Sandys Canyon below opens up, but it's not spectacular. After enjoying the views, we hiked back down to the bikes and headed back on the trail.

Given the generally downhill ride in, we expected it to be a huffer on the way back, but it wasn't bad at all. Only saw a couple of other mtn. bikers and a couple of hikers on the AZT until we got back into town.

A fun and moderate mountain biking adventure!

Lynn and I up in Flag for the weekend for NAU graduation ceremonies. Left the minivan at the hotel and walked to the Walkup Dome via the urban trails. Managed to get a table for 13 at the Beaver Street Brewery for lunch. Rail Road Oatmeal Stout http://www.beaverstreetbrewery.com/bsbeers.html always satisfies...

Stopped at several locations towards the end of the trail to read the interpretive signs and view the red-winged blackbirds that were singing up a storm. Saw several malords and coots at the pond.

Nice little run at 6am this morning. The moon and stars were bright and the sun began to rise as I started back for home.

1 inch of snow fell last night causing this trail to be slightly muddy with packed snow in the shaddy areas. Regardless, this was nice gentle run along the Rio de Flag with impressive canyon walls and wetland at the end of the trail.
