This is a fine hike. The road was not an issue, though it would be if it ever rained. The directions to the trailhead are right-on. Do bring your own toilet paper! The day we hiked it was wonderfully cool and I still consumed 100+ oz of water without a problem, so take care to bring lots of water. The quartz at the very end of the climb is beautiful and makes for a great place to relax. If the day is clear, you can see Picacho Peak and beyond to the south, Four Peaks to the east, and everything in between. We encountered only a few hikers on a beuatiful Sunday afternoon - this is no Camelback.

A very well maintained trail, easy parking and great views from Sunrise Peak. No crowds on a beautiful Sunday morning. So for good work-out trail is surely beats Camelback on many counts. Because the trail is so well maintained it would be a natural for joggers who don't want to turn an ankle. I would rate the hike as a mild 2 instead of a 3 in terms of difficulty - the only steepish climb is the last 1/4 mile to the summit.

My last hike/climb before heading back to Colorado. Picacho Peak is certainly worth the drive from Mesa. Gloves that grip are a real help. And bring PLENTY of water - this was the first time I ever ran out on a hike. The steepness of the climb means you use a lot of energy. I drank more water on this climb than hiking up to Flatiron even though the elevation gain is far less.

And be warned that the "trail map" you get at the ranger station makes the Sunset Vista Trail" appear to be a ridge hike. It's not - you circle to the west around the peak for about 2 miles. It's interesting territory but you might think you were headed out into the desert instead of toward the peak.

A worthy and fun climb. You will be tired!

A very enjoyable hike/climb. I hiked with a friend who was in better shape than I was, and a good thing too! We stayed above the main drainage to the south on a well-worn dirt and scree trail . This trail terminates just below the top of Flatiron, with a fairly tough bouldering move at the very last. We went down the "standard" route and found it to be much kinder footing. Best advice - stay in main drainage trail both ways. But do the hike. It's truly one of the best.
