Was going for a complete loop around mazatzal, ended up being an in and out Barnhardt-Sandy Saddle sort of mystery trail. Still pretty fire damaged, lots of scrubgrass and pokies :x on the saddles, plan was to get to chilson springs and leave the next morning on Brody Seep #264. i spent the night in Chilson springs with a wonderful view of the peak face at sunset and sunrise, all is well. The next morning i couldn't find any trace of trail 264 leaving Chilson as shown on maps i had just the one i came in on, so with sore feet i decided i would take the evil i knew and backtracked out vs. stumbling around for an hour trying to find the trail which could be washed out anyway. Read the hike that was submitted for this and combine three maps and it is all different...erosion in them there hills there is.

this would be a good day hike up to the upper falls which was running nicely...very nice spot for lunch...after the falls you just run the saddle for a couple of miles until you drop back into Chilson Springs through Sandy Saddle I think, pretty much a turn around there unless you want to backtrack and then continue the loop when you get back up to 43, my feet where howling too much already. This was a foot bruising hike, stupid rocks the size of fists everywhere, don't be breaking in a new set of boots on this trail

This was an enjoyable hike. took my 12 yo son. he enjoyed most of it. we started from the old bull pen ranch trailhead. the area between the 3rd and 4th creek crossing was a little tedious and hot but once we reached the last creek crossing we pitched camp and spent two wonderful days by the water. not a lot of comfortable tent areas make sure you have a good sleeping mat.

I was prepared for the floating that is mentioned on all the trail reviews but there weren't any areas that were very deep. stupid drought anyway.

I did this hike clockwise and had lunch by the creek at the trail junction. Very nice locations for taking a midway break and having a swim in warm weather.

left from peralta trailhead on trail 102 lunched at fremont saddle overlooking weavers needle. had the intention of making it to marsh valley for the overnight but got a late start due to traffic on us60...stupid ren fair...ending up setting up camp in the dark somewhere near terrapin pass after cutting my loop short and coming back on the terrapin trail #234. beautiful views, not a lot of shade, it was a strenuous hike in spots but overall very enjoyable.
