Starting from the First Water Trailhead in the Superstition Mountains we took the Lost Dutchman Trail southeast to the Black Mesa Trail. From the Black Mesa junction we went northwest to the Second Water Trail. From there we returned to the First Water Trailhead.

This loop offers a lot of different views of the Superstition Mountains.

We had originally planned to do the Alta and Bajada trails going clockwise starting at the San Juan Lookout. However the San Juan Road was closed to vehicular traffic about a half mile to the ease of the Junction of the Alta and Bajada trails due to a fire in the area a couple of months ago. So we elected to walk the half mile to the junction then start the Alta trail in a counter-clockwise direction. We covered the 4.5 mile first climbing steadily up to the ridgeline of the Ma Ha Tuak Range. Once the trail reaches the ridge it comes around to roughly a southwest heading. The views of South Phoenix were great from the ridge. We could have seen a long way from up there except Phoenix's brown cloud sort of spoiled the view. Eventually we came down off the ridge to the San Juan Lookout where we took a break and ate some snacks.

From the San Juan Lookout we headed south by southwest on the National trail, eventually swinging around to a southeast heading to get to the western trailhead of the Bajada Trail near San Juan Road. We then procede west-northwest following the Bajada Trail moving along the lower northern face of the Gila Range. We thought this trail was going to be easy but it went up and down accross several dry creek beds which seemed to make it longer then it really was. We eventually reached our starting point at the Alta Trail. We still had to walk back the half mile to where we had to park the car.

I had been on this hike a long time ago and I recall it being a lot easier then. Maybe age as something to do with it. There is some gain in elevation which was a bit rocky but the views on the way up and at the bridge itself are well worth the hike.

A beautiful canyon if you can overlook the resort spoiling the view. The early part of the trail in the sunlight was enough to work up a sweat which created problems later. As you get further back into the canyon it narrows, of course, and between that and the forest back in the canyon it was like the sun went down. The temperature felt like it dropped 20 degrees which is not good when you sweating. The views of the canyon all the way back where fantastic.

This is one of the toughest trails I have tried so far. Just when you thought a trail could not get harder it does.

This was a relatively easy trail with just a bit of altitude gain. Very nice views of the surrounding area.
