I set out around 8am on a Saturday in a torrential downpour. The rain lasted for about the first 2 hours of my hike. I chose to take the Horton Creek trail up and the Derrick trail back. I thought I was well prepared for hiking in the rain. The thing I didn't count on was the mud! There were places on this trail that were nearly impassible because of the mud. I spend a lot of my time walking next to the trail to avoid the mud.

Even with the mud it turned out to be a wonderful hike. The rain stopped after a couple of hours and I had a nice overcast day for the remainder. I didn't see one person the entire day. I guess hiking in a downpour isn't normal.

Of course the Horton Creek side of this trail has a great creek along most of it, but I was really impressed with the Derrick trail too. It takes you through some really interesting terrain and foliage changes.

I clocked exactly 10 miles on this (including exploring the creek a lot). It was a good workout but the elevation gain is up and down, not all up anywhere, so not bad at all.

This is a really nice hike that has three very distinct parts. We started on the Abineau trail which progressed upward rather quickly and all of your elevation gain happens in 2.5 miles. Having come directly from Phoenix, and starting at 8500ft and going up to 10500ft in that short of distance was a challenge. The trail is steep but the altitude was the biggest factor. We finally realized that we just had to slow down and catch our breaths. Things progressed much smoother after that.

Going around the avalanche area in Abineau canyon is awesome, but this part of the trail is also the steepest and worst footing of the whole trail.

The Abineau trail terminates into the Water Line road. Walking along the road has a completely different experience. The road is just about level the whole way so walking is very easy. You are in a terrific stand of aspen almost the whole way. It is truly beautiful.

I guess we were enjoying the walk along the road so much that we completely missed the Bear Jaw trail marker. We must have walked a couple of miles down the road before we realized it and had to backtrack. When we got to the trail marker we were astonished that both of us could have just walked right past it. Oh well...

The way down Bear Jaw was probably my favorite part. Lots of aspen & fir trees that are larger than average.

The weather started out a bit on the warm side. We hit the trailhead at about 9am. By the time we were halfway up a nice set of clouds rolled in gave us good shade for the rest of the day. We experiences some light sprinkles for about 5 minutes total. Not enough to even really get wet. All day we could hear thunder rumbling around us.

As of mid-July there were still a good amount of flowers around and the number of bugs and butterflys was incredible!

This was one really steep descent into the canyon. Beautiful creek and well worth the trouble. The road getting in probably requires a high clearance vehicle and maybe 4x4 if it's been raining.
