I've gone up to the West Fork trail every mid-October for the past 6-7 yrs, but this was the best color I have ever seen there. It usually comes later in the month.

We arrived late - around 10am. So the lot was full and there were cars parked along 89A for at least 1/4 of a mile each direction. There was a lot of traffic along the trail, but there were definitely plenty of spots were you could pull off to the side and enjoy some quite moments looking up at the canyon walls. We stopped about 1.5 miles in. I don't know what the spot is called, but it's were the trail opens up into a wide open area and the canyon turns right. That's always my favorite spot on the trail; it feels like I'm in a giant cathedral. The colors in that spot were blazing (it's the spot where I am doing my 2nd Hercules pose). On the way out, I saw two things I'd never seen before there. A large group (50?) of foreign exchange students from ASU. It was nice to see people from all over the world (mainly Asian countries). And we saw a tarantula.

Awesome day.

Went up to Snow Bowl on tuesday (7th) and the color was not at its peak there. The aspens were quite colorful farther up the mountain, but should peak near the parking lot this weekend. It was not very cool either; in the high 60s. Had to stop in at Mike and Rhonda's Place. See you all on the mountain this saturday!

Did the hike via the Flume Rd trail. Got to the waterfall in 15 minutes with help from a friend on four wheels... No, we didn't drive our car up the road. Only APS service trucks are allowed to travel the road (hint hint).

Since this was a weekday, we saw only about 5 people the whole day, which was a refreshing change. I almost wish the creek and waterfall were less easily accessible because it might keep the place a bit cleaner.

Just came out mostly to breathe some cool (41 degrees F) mountain air and shoot the fall colors. Only hike about 1/2 of a mile on the trail. It was pretty windy again, but luckily my tripod broke after 10 minutes so I didn't need to battle the wind today. I was planning on getting a newer, sturdier one anyway. Get up to Flagstaff while the color lasts.

This was more of a scenic drive on Hart Prairie Rd (FR 151). Took FR151 from the 180. It was fantastic. The fast moving clouds (from the extreme wind that day) kept changing the light and shadows as you passed through thick aspen groves (it was really dramatic as I was listening to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings; it seemed like the light was changing with the music, ha ha). Less than a quarter mile from the FR418 junction, there was a large fallen tree (see picture), so I had to turn around. I'd never been on this road, but luckily a local (in an SUV!) told me to take FR151E to get to the northern leg of 151. I took his advice and I think my little Corolla was on the verge of exploding at least 3 or 4 times as I passed through the very rough 151E. It's passable by car, but only if you're crazy. If I had to do it all again, I would backtrack on the 151 all the way back to the 180.

Anyway, the aspens are peaking so get out there now!! It was extremely windy so I didn't really get the photos I wanted with my 300mm (plus 2X teleconverter). I stopped in Hart Prairie for about an hour to shoot from there. The area is beautiful in the fall. Tall grass and golden aspens.

Went up to Snow Bowl to see if there was any color in the aspens: very little near the top. I give it another week before we see the good stuff.

Started at the lower trailhead (the one where the creek is a few hundred yards from the parking lot). Hiked until we found a nice swimming hole. They are common, but you must veer off the main trail, which runs parallel to the creek but about 100 feet away from it. As usual, this creek made for a refreshing and relaxing day.

Had breakfast at Strawberry Lodge; great food, local charm, and easy on the wallet. Started at trailhead around 1030AM. Reached spring after about 1 hr 30 min and dove right in. Water is refreshing after a relatively challenging hike. I would try some of the swimming holes that you encounter before the falls. They were more relaxing and pleasant than the waterfall.

Bring enough water!! The sign at trailhead says "4 quarts of water per person". That's one recommnendation I would definitely heed. We had JUST ENOUGH water, but the hike out would have more enjoyable if we had carried more water (one gallon per person should do it). Dont forget the sunscreen too.

The fall colors are fantastic and surreal in mid to late October. I ran into a couple vacationing from New Hampshire and they couldn't believe all the color; it rivals parts of the Northeast. Unfortunately, I shot most of the foliage on film that I don't have time to scan to digital so I didn't post many foliage pictures. (The digital ones posted do not do justice).

The hike was amazing. The temperature was around 70 degrees at the parking lot. Once we got past the treeline (I'm guessing around 11,750ft), the temperature was 35-40 degrees with 70-80 mph winds. It made for a very exhilirating ascent to the summit. Clouds rolled in (which was a surreal experience at 12,600ft) and rain threatened so we descended after a brief rest at the top. Give yourself the whole day for the hike; it's pretty tough for those of us living at lower elevation. Needless to say, the altitude really took its toll and I was nauseous the whole way down. (Also, don't take Dramamine before you drive...)
