Ambled around today at See Canyon, nice colors and about a dozen vehicles in the parking lot. Stopped by Tonto Creek North of the Jct. with Horton Creek and parked along the East Side of the road were parking is allowed or the No Parking signs were missing and had a late lunch creek side. Tonto Creek almost lured me into a nap but not sure if the forest service considered napping, camping, so stayed awake. Did note the Horton Creek parking lot was almost full. Due to recent yard ward allergy medication kept me from enjoying the aroma of fall.

Instead of a full day only had a half day so I drove out to Verde Glen Area for a late lunch. Noted a very good flow in the East Verde but no info on amount from SRP web site. No one else was around in the area as I "dined out" so no Covid restrictions. The sound of the water made me sleepy or perhaps the late lunch so I broke out the bed roll and laid down and enjoyed the water.

Hiked this afternoon. Quite windy at times and light sprinkles occurred several times for several minutes. I also spent a couple of hours at the archery range wished I would have broight my jeep wrangler and spent the night at the campground.

Visited Hieroglyphics Springs in the late afternoon arriving at the water pool adjacent to the petroglyph panel. No running water and the poll was apx. two feet below the highest watermark (bathtub ring) above the pool. A large amount of bees were visiting the pool of water and I noted birds were able to visit the water without causing the bees to be disturbed. I did not observe any birds attempt to eat any of the bees though. Two rock squirrels also visted the water and one checked out my daypack. The petroglyphs were in the shadows of the afternoon sunlight so I did not take any photographs but spent the time of my visit contemplating the meaning of the petroglyphs.

Visited the V-V petroglyphs, slight overcast prevented me from taking photograhs. The panels are also best viewed in the late afternoon when the petroglyphs would recieve direct sunlight.

Visited on the afternoon, light rain from the previous night thru the early afternoon. On the way to Bullpen trailhead, I noted several bull elk and had been informed by elk hunters that there is a resident herd in the Camp Verde area. The overlook of Bullpen trailhead was quite stunning to observe the fall colors of the cottonwoodand sycamores alon West Clear Creek. I hiked along West Clear Creek with the objective to enjoy the fall colors and the aroma of this riparian woodland in full fall color and dampened by rain.

Hiked on 10/22/02 and started from the trail head at apx. 10am. The trail was well marked with white paint on tree trunks with the word Box and in some cases a direction arrow. The morning was overcast during my hike and their was a light rain shower prior to my hike. Upon arrival at the upper end of the Box as it is called locally or gorge in this web site. I noted the water in Christopher Creek had a nice clear and modest flow. I explored the area up stream from the box or gorge including the meadow Cindy described on her visit. I has lunch on the south bank which is slighty hight and opposite the meadow, this area would make a good camp site. Please note apx. 1/2 mile upstream is the location for a girl scout camp and there is a well worn trail from the girl scout camp to the gorge.

Hiked the Garden Valley loop during a cool and windy mourning, though cloudy and threats of rain it was a good hike. Left First water trailhead after purchasing my permit at the vending machine. Inserted a five dollar bill received four one dollar coins and a permit that are usually four dollars. Hiked to Garden Valley and explored this little valley and headed to Hackberry Springs for lunch. Visted the spring which was flowing apx 1/2 quart a minute from the pipe, though this water did not reach the lower concrete basin unlike during the month of May. After leaving Hackberry Springs I headed for and visited the site of First Water Ranch. I followed the old road from First Water Ranch to First Water Trailhead.

I have had two visits since the article came out in Arizona Highways. I made a picnic out of it and explored the area. I think the forest service gave up on keeping the area clean and the East Verde east of AZ 87 (Flowing Springs) is just as bad. While exploring the Waterwheel area I have not been able to locate the flume location that supplied water to it or its purpose. I visited the Verde Glen area, it was in better shape and also visited Pieper Hatchery Springs.

I first made this trip in 1967, when I first moved to Arizonaand joined the Boy Scouts in Chandler. We would be dropped off at Sunflower on a friday night, hike to Ram Valley and set up camp for the night. The next day we would hike to the site of Camp Reno and spend another night. Sunday we would hike to Punkin Center. I have made this hike numerous times down through the years and I also camp near the site of Camp Reno. As for 4x4 driving, I have not driven this road this year, but on two previous trips a vehicle was stuck or broke down (one was a forest service vehicle) and I had to return. Since the Sunflower (Ram Valley) side gets quite a few visitors, I would not like to leave a vehicle on this side. Coming from the Punkin Center side Forest Road 491 becomes Forest Road 524 (new color edition of the Tonto National Forest Map), but Camp Reno (the site that is) is located at the end of Forest Road 409. Camp Reno was an out post in the late 1860's for more information on Camp Reno, see Camp Reno, An Outpost in Apacheria, 1867-1869 by Jim Schreier.
