| no partners | | This was my second hike to the hoodoos at the top of Superstition Mt. This is normally a very challenging hike, but add to it a sudden change in weather, to make this even more fun. When my hiking partner and I got to the top of the Mt. there was patchy snow on the ground, the temp was in the low 40's, a strong wind and visibility was poor, so we decided to head right back down. We hadn't gone 15 minutes and it started to snow and you could see the fog roll into the canyon. As we worked our way back to the saddle above Siphon Draw it continued to snow harder and the trail was getting very wet and slick, slowing our decent. The snow was starting to accumulate and I was starting to think I was back in Michigan instead of 3000 feet above the desert floor. Just below the saddle I took the attached picture. By the time we got to the Draw it was so wet and slippery that we had to slide down on our butts holding small rocks in our hands to drag for some traction in slowing our slide. Because this added another dimension this hike it made it fun, but we were soaked and cold by the time we got back to the car. |
