| no partners | | This is a pretty decent hike, especially since we started out early (around 0830) with temps in the 70's and some cloud cover. Given that it was Labor Day weekend, we expected a lot of hikers but there were only a three other cars in the parking lot and only a few groups that we ran into on the trail. (However, all of the campsites appeared full.) You do have to pay if you park in the lot...$6...which I confirmed with a Ranger. The creek runs nicely although the trail itself has only a few brief encounters with the creek...mostly it is well above the creek. The actual Spring is kind of neat...water just gushes out of the rocks.
On return, the sun was out and the temp heating up. We started to run into many more hikers starting the trek upwards...As a final note, when you get very near the end (at the campground), the trail kind of disappears into the grass. One might follow the dry creek bed but that would be wrong as it's difficult to traverse given the rounded rocks.
As others have written, the elevation gain is barely noticed except at the very end as you navigate switchbacks to get to the Spring.
Best part is that all roads are paved so no 4x4 required. One note of caution though...Star Valley, a small town just east of Payson, has set up permanent photo radar traps. Use caution as the speed limit on AZ260 drops within the town limits. |
