This hike to the window rock can be completed within a single day if one starts early & does not loiter too long. However, I decided to make it an overnight backpack trip, as I like to loiter and take pictures with my lightweight Nikon and tripod. The start elevation at Lowes Ventana Resort trailhead is 3000'. The trail crosses the creek in the narrow canyon 14 times. There was a good water flow due to the snow melt, but I never had a problem crossing the creek. The maiden pools were a welcome relief after a consistent uphill grind. After relaxing for about an hour at the pools, I continued up the canyon to the peak. On the way down the next day, I couldn't resist the temptation, so I took a dip in the creek. (frigid! but instant rejuvenation)

This is the trail that goes up the back side of Picacho Peak. It is about a mile longer (one way) than the more popular Hunter Trail that goes up the front side of the mountain. There were some serious cable climbs. We took our time getting up to the peak - about 3 hours. We made frequent stops to setup my tripod & take some self-timer photos. I took a panorama shot at the peak (see my pics).

1-2-2008 Departed Tanque Verde trailhead in Saguaro NP at about 815 am. Arrive at Juniper Basin at about 2 pm (6.9 miles); I hiked slow & took maybe a half dozen breaks to setup tripod & take pics.
1-3-2008 Departed Juniper Basin camp at about 8 am with only tripod, camera, & water & arrived at Tanque Verde peak at about 945 am (2.1 miles). Departed at about 1015 am and arrived back at Juniper Basin camp at about 1145 am. Departed camp around noon & arrived back at Saguaro NP trailhead at 430 pm. Plenty of water at Juniper Basin. There was still a few remnants of snow around the Juniper Basin & Tanque Verde peak areas.

elevations:
Saguaro NP Tanque Verde trail head 3100'
Juniper Basin camp 6000'
Tanque Verde peak 7040'
