Drive North of Apache Juction on highway 88 to the Hackamore trail head. There is a nice parking area where you start the hike on the packsaddle trail. Nice fairly level hike to Cotton Wood Springs about 3 miles where you drop into the wash. Beautiful rock formations all along the creek bottom, hike about another 2 miles where you will arrive at the wishbone junction, There we climbed out of the wash and got up on the ridge, that we followed back overlooking the wash we climbed out off. From there you had some great vistas, we followed ridge for about a mile than dropped back down into the wash and followed it back to the car.

A group of 5 did the Fish creek canyon hike on April 4 2009. We followed the trail report by leaving a shuttle car at end of FS road 80 and took another vehicle to the other side of the bridge over Fish Creek were we started our hike. The hike was great we even saw 3 Mountain lions. We did encounter a problem which was not noted in the trail writeup and that was when we got within a Quarter of a mile to the end of the canyon the water was so deep we could NOT continue. The water from Canyon Lake was so high and had backed up into theSalt River which backed into the fish creek canyon makeing the the water about 10' deep with shear walls on either side of the canyon. We did turn back and had to spend the night in the canyon because we ran out of daylight. We were prepared and didn't have a problem hiked out the following morining. IT SHOULD BE NOTED TO BE SURE AND CHECK THE WATER LEVEL IN CANYON LAKE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE LOOP. We all agreed it was one of the nices hikes in area
