I got pulled over. I was driving too fast on I-40 on the way to Winslow. Of course, I didn't admit that to the fine highway patrolman. As he stated in his mandatory firm tone, that I was traveling at a criminal speed, he expressed that he would only give me a warning. I really do love it when they give me souvenirs instead of fines. Anyhow, as the po-po turned and walked the off ramp back to his car, I was told that I was incredibly good. And lucky. I looked past Jef in the passenger's seat to the cold horizon and with the Mountain Lion sign in view, I had decided it was time to get out of the truck and stretch.

Ruins. More ruins. Beyond them, more ruins. The first set of ruins had old gas pumps. The kind that you see folks haggle over on American Pickers. I still regret not grabbing a piece of mangled pump, but there was no room in the truck. These were from after the last move around 1938. The pumps remnants were long gone by the time I went back there.

I found out later that the zoo moved as route 66 moved. The whole story is pretty well documented at: http://www.hkhinc.com/arizona/twoguns/richardson.htm

I've been back to explore the ruins a few more times and love to wander thinking of what may have been happening in the area in it's heyday.

This short hike was perfect after not being able to go hiking for six weeks. The weather was 75, a light breeze, and cloudy. It was perfect! It made the fields wildflowers pop against the gray sky. There were eight of us and Sam (this dog loves to hike!), and no other hikers to be seen.

The weather held for a while, but we heard thunder as we were crossing under the crackling power lines. The tunnel was really cool, and as we came out the other side the wind seemed to pick up. About a quarter mile outside of the tunnel, looking down into the canyon there is wreckage at the bottom. Really cool! That was of course when the rain started, but we were not far from the tunnel, so we ventured back for a snack before heading back.

We did see some folks on ATVs when we got back to the trucks, but no other hikers. Nice, easy relaxing day!

Just two of us on this venture to Sunset-Brookbank. We missing a morning shower on the hill because we needed to stop by an outfitter in Flag because Dirk forgot socks. Timing was perfect, air was nice and clear, and there were a few cars at the trailhead, but not crowded at all.

The first 1/3 was a good climb out of the valley, and I grabbed a radio and let Dirk move ahead of me. There were a few joggers on the trail coming down. I found a tree growing from a rock, but on the side view you can see the rock split in two. There were some great views of the San Fransico's to the North. We me at the top of the hill where the trail moved west on a ridge affording some sweet views of Elden. We moved across the ridge and found a nice long log that was cut for the trail to have a snack on. It was a nice zuchini bread that I baked.

We set out after a nice break to finish the trail that at this point moved into forest and found ourselves in the middle of a long spread out clan of mountain bikes. The bikers and we took turns passing each other in between some of the cranky switchbacks in the trees before we hit some open meadows where they took an other trail. The rest of the trail was mostly wide jeep trail, going down an easy grade, back to the trailhead.

This was a great day to be out of the heat, a nice breezy 80 was just what I needed!

There were seven of us and Sam (this dog outhikes the best of us). Nice and steep up Humphries to the rock field. I lived all of the folks running past me, especially that lady that ran up, 45 minutes later passed me running down, and then ran up passing me again. Ugghh.

It was overcast, but the temperature was an awesome 77 degrees! Before we hit the rock field (7th switchback heading North off the main trail) it started to rain, and by the time we crossed the rocks and went through the trees to the base of the crash site, it was cold and raining harder. I was thankful that Jef hung back waiting for my sister Arlyn and I to head over, and there are almost too many cairns.

I put on my rain gear and we snacked on some fresh baked cinnamon apple bread, but the rain was getting heavier. We wandered around the crash site for a while in total awe. There were parts all around. The temperature was dropping and the rain not letting up, so we decided to head back. Of course by the time we hit the main trail the sun was back out, and it started to warm up. The trip down was a nice jaunt, and there were plenty of friendly folks greeting us as we passed -especially that earthy-crunchy dude that smelled like he just estinguished his bud giggled and snorted "rightous day no doubt" as bumbled past us. In all, it was a great hike, great to be out of the heat, and a nice steep workout!
