| no partners | | My cousin and I started this hike from the trailhead for the Miller Canyon hike at 9 a.m. in mid-May. The skies were clear and it was a warm day. The summit was only slightly chilly due to very high winds. The creek in Miller Canyon was flowing and added beauty to the hike. The Miller Canyon trail is mostly shaded and thus cool. We made it to Bathtub Spring and the Crest Trail around 11:30.
From this point, we took the Crest Trail to the spur trail junction that leads to Miller Peak. Much of the Crest Trail was overgrown with slightly picky shrubs, but the necessary bushwhacking hardly detracted from the experience. Many yellow wildflowers adorned the the stretch of the Crest Trail between Bathtub Spring and the grove of aspens.
Along the Crest Trail, at about 12:30 (and near the beautiful Aspen grove), we saw a group of about 20 illegal immigrants in front of us dash into the forest below. They were men, women, and children--and were obviously afraid of meeting us. Perhaps five minutes later, came upon about ten border-crossers--all men this time--just taking a break from a long day of travel. They did not flee, so my cousin and I exchanged the words "buenos dias" and "adios" with them. Though they did not seem threatening, we didn't stick around for long. About 12:50, we reached the spur trail to Miller Peak. From this point, it was about a quarter-mile to the summit of Miller Peak. At about 1:15, we were on the top. I looked around for a summit register, but only found what resembled a rock cairn. There were also concrete remains of what appeared to once be some sort of structure. The views from the top were tremendous, save for some haze to the west. We remained on the summit until about 1:40. On the way down, we saw no border-crossers. We made it back to the trailhead at about 3:30. |
