From the topo map that I had I determined that hiking north through the superstitions from Peralta would yield less uphill hiking. We started the hike off at 8:50 AM from the Peralta trailhead knowing full well that the hardest part of the hike would be the first two miles to Fremont Saddle. We decided to get the hardest part of the trail over with first. We made it up to the saddle in just under two hours. The biggest obstacle that slowed us down on the way up were all of the people on the trail. Peralta is a very popular trail and we were looking forward to some quiet once we passed the saddle. Fremont Saddle was a great place to take a breather and rest up prior to our decent down East Boulder Canyon. The Peralta Trail 102 continues north from the saddle and is narrower and less maintained than the fist two miles between the trail head and the saddle. Hiking north, the trail follows the East Boulder canyon and stays on the west side of Weavers Needle. The views of Weavers Needle up close were interesting. We stayed on the Peralta Trail until it intersected with the Dutchmans Trail 104. There are several intersection with other trails but it was easy to remember which trail to stay on, just go to the left. I was surprised to see as much water as we did flowing through all of the canyons. The water wasn't drinkable with out a filter but is was a welcomed relief for cooling off. Once on the Dutchmans Trail the path curved to the West and then northwest. The only other bit of uphill trail that we had was encountered leading to Parkers Pass. The trail leading to the pass was gradual and far less grueling than the first two miles leading to Fremont Saddle. Since we had been hiking a little more than 6 miles downhill it was a nice change of pace and have some uphill to tackle. From Parkers pass it was all downhill to the First Water trail head. Between the pass and the trailhead the trail crosses the creek seven times. Sorry about not posting thr gps route with this post, my gps crapped out on me in the middle of the hike. |
