This was a perfect day for a hike. The weather was clear skies with a high in the high 60's. My Dad and I were the only ones out on this hike. The route chosen was the Dacite Loop (minus the "Super" as Joe put it because we went back down the Peralta Trail instead of the Cave Trail). Anyway, I had been on the beginning and the ending of the this trail while doing the Superstition Ridgeline (beginning up Carney Springs trail) and the ending with the Peralta trail. I have wanted to hike to connecting portion for quite some time. I was definitely not disappointed. The views of the Needle from this side were breathtaking. The route was pretty well cairned from West Boulder Saddle until we reached Freemont Saddle which was good since there was not a real defined trail. This was some great rugged country with a feeling of extreme solitude. We only encountered one other group of 2 guys who were doing the same hike the other way. The solitude was not to last throughout the remainder of the hike. I think the equivalent of the whole town of Queen Creek must have been on the Peralta Trail today.

Today's hike was a "get out and stretch the legs a little" hike. I have done a few hikes in the Superstitions, but oddly enough have never been out to the first water trailhead. We (Dad and I) had limited time so we hiked as far as second water canyon then had to turn back around. There were 2 or 3 different scout troops camping overnight and the sheriff's office was out looking for someone who got lost. There was the helicopter, 3 SUV's full of people and a paramedic. The guys in the helicopter flew by us, pulled over to look at us and boy they did not look happy. Maybe it was their day off and they were pulled away from their plans for the day.

My wife (6 months pregnant with the fifth) and I hiked it this time near dusk. Light on the way up, dark on the way back. This is a great family hike. We have taken our 3 year old and he did pretty good.

This hike was a pretty hard one; a well deserved rating of 5. My brother in law and I went up the West Boulder Saddle and down Flat Iron. The route was well cairned and the views were spectacular. For the first half of the day we were in cloud cover (sometimes visibility was cut down to 30 feet), which was a little disappointing because the views weren't there and it made it so we could not see our destination, but they later burned off and we were able to see just fine. I think this one will become an annual tradition. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of a challenge and a full day available.

We took the whole family out for this one. My Mom and Dad, sister's family and my family. 6 adults, 7 kids (3-10). Good family hike.

This was the first time for me on Flat Iron. Siphon Draw is a real beast.

We hiked this trail right after the good rains in December. The falls were running really well. It was 27 degrees when we started which made for some really nice ice formations at the falls. It was pretty easy hiking to get to the falls, but there were 4 or 5 times when we realized that we were not on the proper trail. When the falls are running it is really a nice site.
