We spent 4 days down in the canyon: Got to Hualapai hilltop at 3am on Friday - camped out in the parking lot, woke up around sunrise, hiked into Supai and beyond, set up camp and relaxed. Hopped up, down, in and around every waterfall and rope swing we could find, then attempted to hike to the Colorado river from Havasu Canyon...Bad idea. About 2 Miles in I stretched my Achilles tendon something fierce! Too much hopping around in water socks, never again. So I hobbled back to camp - by this point my tendon was on fire. After a good night's rest my foot was swollen, red and burning so I had no choice - limp another 2 miles back into Supai and hitch a mule ride back for $20.00. No such luck, by the time we'd arrived in Supai the last mule train had left for the day. My only option was to catch a $95 Helicopter ride out of the canyon. Make that $190 - my buddy demanded a ride as well and he of course had no money on him. Turns out they had a credit card machine at Hualapai Hilltop. Score! The helicopter ride took all of about 3 minutes and was worth every penny. Moral of the story: don't put heavy mileage on water socks! Never a bad time on the mao. |
