Epic hike... Been waiting to bag this one. We met a lot of great folks along the way, however someone lost their dog near timber line yesterday and he (the dog) was exhausted and attempting to take cover within 1/4mi of the summit...Poor guy. Luckily someone contacted the owner and we ran into the guy on our way down.

I'm exhausted in a good way. Never a bad time on the mountain.

Made it to the top, no bears. This hike reminded me of Camelback mountain, but higher and longer (obviously). I wanted to continue trekking along Sunset trail to Upper Oldham into Buffalo park, but we were pressed for time. Lookout tower was closed - bummer. Great hike though. Never a bad time on the mao.

First attempt: A beautiful spring day. Up I went with confidence, camelback, cannon and clip (I'll shoot any rabid fox I find). T'was a Thursday and not busy at all, t'was also mating season and juniper berries were in bloom. This means seeing a bear is possible, even on a popular hike like Elden Lookout.

Sure enough, about 1.1 mi in (4th switchback after the 2nd fat man's loop junction) I ran into an adult black bear - 40 ft up and away standing on hind legs, munching on juniper berries staring directly at me. This was my first time seeing a bear so I was glad to have my "piece" of mind with me. The bear didn't seem to mind me so I carefully slid the clip into the pistol just in case, and backed down the way I had came. I wondered whether or not to inform the ranger station of my black bear sighting and decided not to. After all, he was just doing his thing - same as me. Never a bad time on the mao.

Back when I lived in Tempe: I made sure everyone I knew had been on this hike at least once. Peralta trail is mandatory - do not waste time on the valley's "urban peaks" if you have not bagged this hike. Bring a snack to munch on at Fremont saddle while taking in the view.

The famed Mexican gold poppies bloom out of control in spring. Jojoba beans should be falling off the shrubs in Autumn - they're mighty tasty in my opinion and make a good addition to trail mix. Water has been abundant lately (past few seasons) and I've even run into snow and ice a few times. It can be crowded, but folks are usually happy to be out there. Dogs too. Never a bad time on the mao.

My first time in the Catalinas. Amazing hike with just about everything you could ask for - running water, flowers in bloom, good elevation change along the way. Noticing I had forgotten my boots upon arriving, I stomped all 8.6 miles out in flip flops. Also we barely dodged a monsoon, it started pouring as we drove down the mountain and back home. Never a bad time on the mao.

My favorite hike to date! There are truly no equivalents to this trip. 8 easy, scenic miles into Supai, 2 more astoundingly beautiful miles into camp. We spent 4 days down in the canyon: Got to Hualapai hilltop at 3am on Friday - camped out in the parking lot, woke up around sunrise, hiked into Supai and beyond, set up camp and relaxed. Hopped up, down, in and around every waterfall and rope swing we could find, then attempted to hike to the Colorado river from Havasu Canyon...Bad idea. About 2 Miles in I stretched my Achilles tendon something fierce! Too much hopping around in water socks, never again. So I hobbled back to camp - by this point my tendon was on fire. After a good night's rest my foot was swollen, red and burning so I had no choice - limp another 2 miles back into Supai and hitch a mule ride back for $20.00. No such luck, by the time we'd arrived in Supai the last mule train had left for the day. My only option was to catch a $95 Helicopter ride out of the canyon. Make that $190 - my buddy demanded a ride as well and he of course had no money on him. Turns out they had a credit card machine at Hualapai Hilltop. Score! The helicopter ride took all of about 3 minutes and was worth every penny. Moral of the story: don't put heavy mileage on water socks! Never a bad time on the mao.

One of my favorite county high points... We encountered some rough road getting down there from FR300. I popped a BF Goodrich "Rugged Trail" tire on the lower portion of FR76. The poor roads keep the crowds away - even on labor day weekend. The weather was cool and rainy, the view was spectacular and the cairn/ register was patiently awaiting our arrival. Also - I saw some very choice, vacant camping spots in the area.

Never a bad time on the mow.
