Gorgeous hike with amazing views! I saw this super cool cave and went about halfway in. Then I wondered what might be living in it. As I hiked out, about 20 feet from the entrance, was some animal poo. Big poo. I don't want to know what animal poo-ed it.
Anyways, this was a very strenuous hike that challenged me. It's 1.5 miles and a 2000 ft. elevation gain, according to another hiker. I need to confirm the distance, the elevation gain is correct. There was a long section where I kept saying,"Not enough switchbacks! Not enough switchbacks!"

Devil's Bridge is an easy hike and SO worth it! The bridge is just amazing, the pics don't do it justice. I found a snakeskin on the trail, score! My kids thought it was cool anyway. The trailhead is off a very rocky dirt road. Cars had to drive very slowly, but I recommend driving right up to the trailhead as opposed to walking the dirt trail.

Decided to go climbing with my buddy Justin.... It was too hot! So we hiked/climbed the area. It was fun, until we went down a sketchy area around the actual pond. Justin was all about his new Sportiva approach shoes which I envied as I've been looking for some. However, as he was climbing down a large boulder, his Sportivas stuck to the rock great, but his pack also got hung up causing him to lose his balance! He started sliding.... and kept sliding. About 30 feet! I saw him falling and then lost sight. All I could here were his quickdraws jingling down the mountain. Then I hear,"Yeah! Woo! That was sick! Awesome!" Needless to say, when it was my turn to go down, I went very slowly. :scared:

I went through the Kartchner Cavern and then hiked all around the grounds. Great trip for kids. Easy and with lots to see.

A friend of mine told me of some little known trails that are north of the golf course in Verrado. If you go north on Verrado Way and turn west on main street, you can park in the country club parking lot. Then head north and follow the trail up to a small hill. I found some interesting friends on this trip that included a snake, a beehive, and a rather large blueish colored lizard. It was a very easy hike until the very end. We just stood there, looking at an ominous hill that had to be at a 25%incline all the way up. We then started trekking. With our heads down and trying to trudge forward, we decided it was time to catch our breath. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked up at the remainder of the hill to be climbed and then turned around to the see the distance we already traveled. We hadn't even made a dent in it. So we kept going till our legs were burning and finally, my friend gave up. I'm in a bit better condition than he so I kept going and made it to the top. Victory! It was a great feeling and the view from the top was nice. There is also some fun bouldering all along the trail, if you're interested.

After going through Colossal Cave, hike the surrounding area. It's a nice relaxing stroll through trees and past a riparian area. See pics.

It was freezing when we went that weekend, but well worth it. The area is so beautiful. This was my daughter's 2nd trip with me and she had a blast. Climbing comes naturally for her, funny how kids are like that. Her confidence has soared since she first started. The problem solving and comraderie that she has learned is invaluable. I encourage anyone with children to take teach them to climb. We indoor climb at Climbmax in Tempe and the time spent together has given us a wonderful mother/daughter bond. In fact, we're headed there now!!

Goin back to Jack's next weekend!

I was SO looking forward to a really difficult hike with Flat Iron and I was a bit disappointed. It wasnt nearly as hard as I thought, but......... it was a lot of fun! The scenery was beautiful with lots of yellow and purple flowers, photos to come. Near the trailhead, there is the opportunity for some really fun bouldering. Just make sure the rock is solid enough for a climber. Bits of the rock were crumbling in my hand as I went along. Next time, I'm bringing my climbing shoes!

Ok, so I really wanted to hike Flat Iron, but time was limited so a friend suggested we go to North Mountain and I am so glad we did!

Following trail 100, we hiked up to the ruins of a restuarant that burned down in the early 60s called Cloud 9. We decided to veer off the trail and headed back via a trail of rubble that was scattered down the side of the hill. Amongst the rubble we found a realty For Sale sign, gas cans and an antique fire extinguisher. Did I mention it burned down after only being open 3 years? Interesting finds... We also found some broken dishes and old soda bottles.

The flora in AZ right now is gorgeous. Being a California native, I sometimes miss a diverse landscape. I'm enjoying the greenery that is peppered with colorful blooms and even some curiously shaped cactus.(Jame, you know what I mean) I was also happy to find a few interesting rocks that satisfied the rockhound in me.

Anyways, it was a great hike, but next weekend... Flat Iron here I come!
