The trip started out well enough but things soon went off-track after I belatedly realized two things: 1- My GPS wasn't logging my current track and 2- I took the wrong trail after the first split but didn't realize it, immediately, due to Item 1...
Since I was heading in the general direction I was intending, I didn't bother to back-track and get on TR#192 as I think I should have. I knew I'd intersect with the planned route further on (and I did - for a short while...). Shortly after re-joining my planned route, I was faced with yet another unclear intersection; I chose poorly. Instead of following Eagle's route, I contoured around on a different trail that (I think) eventually took me to Six Shooter Camp(?). Although the maps I had showed the trail should have connected, the trail petered out in a dead end so I couldn't easily link up with the trail leading to Ferndell I had logged in my GPS. Not to be discouraged (it was only one canyon and about 1/3 mile away) I bushwhacked off-trail to get to it (game trails are so convenient...).
Once there, I spent a couple of minutes consulting my map and verifying my location then headed up the trail to Pinal Peak. From 4500 ft. on, I encountered intermittent patches of snow (some spots up to 1 ft!). If it weren't for the cow's hoof prints, I would have had a tough time slogging up sections of the trail. As is was, coming down was a little interesting!
So... even with the minor detours and side-trips, I managed to hit the peak by 1140. Had a bit of lunch, then headed back down Six Shooter. Arrived back at the car by 1430. Pretty good day overall! Next trip should be a bit more organized. |
