This was this year's version of the our annual Christmas Day hike in Estrella Mt Park. Bright sunny day, blue skies, temps near 70F. Five of us made up our party. Started from the rodeo grounds parking lot at the junction of the Toothaker and Rainbow Valley trails. Turned left onto Butterfield Trail. The area was noticeably green rather than the usual browns. We then turned right onto Dysart Trail to traverse around the mountain. We then turned right onto the Toothaker Trail to return to the rodeo grounds. Overall it was a great hike with easy going trails up and down washes. There was a longer, steeper climb as we approached the Dysart Trail intersection.

Perfect day to hit the trail. Had some other business in Prescott Valley, so decided to try the Peavine. Started about 9:30 a.m. with blue skies and perfect temperature. There was a light breeze. It was an easy hike out and back. Saw a few squirrels and quite a few birds both water and land. Since the fire department training site is near the trail, the Yavapai CC fire training class was doing a warm up run when I started and on the way back you could see them training in the facility. Moderate number of very friendly people on the trail. Didn't try the side trails down to the lake because of some knee issues. Will need to try those another time.

It was a cloudy and very cool day. Had to layer today. The clouds gives everything a totally different look. The trail is fairly easy with great views all around. Snow covered peaks to the east and north. At one point we, we could see the fountain in Fountain Hills shooting into the air. Met only a few people on the trail.

This was our first attempt into South Mountain. We had intentions of starting at the Pima Canyon Trailhead, but alas no parking, so we headed over the War Paint Drive Trailhead. We followed the trail to the right until it intersected with the Desert Classic Trail. This was fairly level with a gentle increase in elevation, rocks, and vegetation. We then headed east on the Desert Classic Trail for about 3/4 of a mile. This section was more up and down and winding. We then head west on a spur for 0.9 of mile of up and down with plenty of cacti and brushy vegetation. Part of the trail was through a small wash. It was amazing to see a cactus growing out of a pile of rock. It came to an end at an intersection with the spur to the Corona de Loma trailhead. We turned left on to the spur and headed back to War Paint Drive about, 1.5 miles. This section was fairly level with some up and down and in and out of washes. It was a beautiful day with only a few hikers, but more than enough mountain bikers.
