The other scientifically documented species of flashing firefly in Arizona, Bicellonycha wickershamorum, otherwise known as the "sky island firefly" because it is typically found at elevations higher than 4000'

For the second year in a row we went hiking in the Catalinas with our eyes peeled for wild Arizona hops (Humulus lupulus var. neomexicanus). Last year we did not find any but this year was a success. We crushed and smelled the cones from seven different plants we found and ended up harvesting from the three with the best aroma profiles. We're going to brew a pale ale with them next week

Found a spot near Amado off I-19 for my 2nd attempt at photographing the fireflies. This location had an even larger population (or perhaps I timed it better this year, not sure). I think for next year's excursion I might rent a brighter lens.

We were on our way to Fossil Creek Thursday morning for a 2-night backpacking trip. DURING the drive up we found out that they were closing the entire Fossil Creek Wilderness due to fire hazard. We were a bit peeved since we called the ranger station just two days prior to confirm any restrictions and they told us there were no issues; wish they would have given more notice. So... since we already had everything packed and we were ready to go we needed to pick a new destination and ended up buying permits for Aravaipa on our cell phones.

The Canyon was a bit hot hiking during mid-day, but sitting in a shady spot in the creek was a one way ticket to heat relief. This time we checked out Booger, Paisano, and Hell Hole Canyon. We came across 8 deer in the main canyon and 5 bighorns in Hell Hole. Booger was a bit boring, Paisano was awesome -- want to go back, and Hell Hole had a bit of a creepy vibe but still very cool (parts of it are slot canyon-ish)

Too cool not to share. Lemosho Trail 8-day route + 1 day safari in Arusha National Park. A once in a lifetime experience to say to least. We all summited and had a great time with the African Walking Company.

Went to West Fork on Friday to try and beat the crowds, as if that is possible when the fall colors are out! We hit the trail at 5:30 to make it past the subway for some photos during the power hour, only to find that many of the trees past the subway area were already bare :-({|= . It looks like the cold front that blew through last week zapped the leaves pretty good, as about 75% of the maples have already shed their leaves. There was however more than enough color remaining to make the trip up worthwhile. The colors seem to be concentrated near the canyon walls, perhaps because those trees are more protected from the wind. We made our way back slowly with lots of exploring and a couple of naps to boot.

Set out on a group adventure to the WCC. We intended to go to the White box and hanging gardens but missed our first forest road turn off and ended up on some pretty hairy roads. After going about 2 miles too far past the ranch, we turned left onto 142B which took us to a location at the edge of the canyon about 3 miles upstream of the hanging gardens trailhead. There was a nice trail down to the creek from this location, which apparently is the Calloway Trail. Moving downstream was a bit slow with 12 people. We made it about 1.5 miles before stopping and setting up camp. Once at camp I did some fly fishing and caught 6 smallmouth bass in about 20 minutes on a #16 BWO while the rest of the crew went hunting for crawdads. That night the fire raged, many beers were enjoyed, and a feast of fresh fish, corn, crawdads, taters, and cajun spices was had by all.

We decided to take advantage of the weak winter and make an early May trip to the LCR. Spent Thursday night in the bed of the truck in Cameron and got an early start on Friday. It took us six hours to get to the river from the TH. We left a water cache of 3 liters per person half way down the trail. The author is definitely correct in that if you do not see a cairn every couple of minutes, you are not on the trail! We reached the blue river around 1:00 and took a nice long rest in the shade. The water felt a bit warmer to me than the water at Havasupai, and even better for swimming. The pumped river water tasted like salty mineral water. It is drinkable after adding lots of Crystal Light and/or Tang. We drank about a gallon of pumped LCR water during the trip with no ill effects. We headed downstream and made it about four miles before setting up camp on a nice beach at a big bend in the river. The first mile downstream from the base of Salt Trail Canyon is bbaaaadddly overgrown with reeds but after that the trail was easily navigable.

The next day we continued downstream and made it to the confluence around 10:30 AM where we saw about 30 people from 4 different Colorado River rafts docked at the confluence. On our way out of the confluence we ran into the AZ Fish & Game crew performing their annual survey of the Humpback Chub. They said they were about to take lunch, and offered to cook us up a hot meal! Great guys. We continued upstream back to the mouth of Salt Trail Canyon. We only ran into one other backpacker the whole weekend. She started in Cameron and had already been hiking 4 days. The next morning we hit the trail at 6:40, and made it out of the canyon in 4.5 hours... 1.5 hours faster than it took us to hike down. That is a testament to how difficult the footing on this trail truly is! It was a great trip and I plan to go back at some point to head upstream to the springs.

Hiked to the mouth of Romero Canyon, spent the night at a perfect camp site about 0.5 miles in, and then bushwhacked all the way up to the pools. Only about 1.5 miles from the mouth to the pools but it took us 6 hours! There is no trail in lower Romero, and getting through involves quite a bit of scrambling, bushwhacking and bouldering. Not recommended for everyone...but worth it to me for the solitude (did not see another person until the pools!) and all of the small waterfalls and large pools along the way.
