While this wasn't a planned hike for us, we were up in Sedona for a fun weekend and found some extra time after our Easter morning festivities before we had to return back to the Valley. With no planning and knowing we wanted to do approx 4 miles with little elevation change, the Beartooth map pointed us towards West Fork. The server we had our favorite Sedona pizza place confirmed that is his 2nd favorite hike in AZ, behind only Havasupi.

We dilly dally'ed quite a bit and didn't get to the trailhead until about 1pm, but this served us well again as our exit ended up being much quieter with less trail traffic. First off, upon arrival, the parking is $9 to enter the park. I think it's worth it, the $1 map has some cool history for the first part of the trail about the original usage of the building remains you see. As several have stated, the new bridge is definitely huge, but makes for those less capable to get over and view the apple orchards and buildings mentioned above.

Once you get to the trail, you are immediately down by the creek and greeted by a cool breeze and the sound of wind whipping through a pine tree-filled canyon. There are various areas in which you can get down to the water by a beach. This is definitely a family-friendly trail as there are lots of wide areas and sandy entrances to the water. Scattered through the stream are pools that had various types of minnow size fish. We saw a few interesting creatures in the water including something that looked like a cross between a centipede, shrimp, and crayfish. We have no idea what it was.

The trail itself had lots of beauty including tree-lined cliffs and lots of color on the cliff walls. This trail was so pretty and I will definitely be back this year with my kids. There was only a couple hand-fulls of crossing the creek and rock hopping. The biggest obstacle would be the many roots that are sticking up a few inches above ground level on the trail. As with most Sedona trails, if you can do this on a weekday, do it if you want any privacy. We probably passed about 50 other hikers on this trail if not more in a short 2 hour span. There are some opportunities to climb on big rock/ledges. Have some taste though and please don't leave your mark. There was a lot of 'american hieroglyphics' (ie: graffiti scratches) in the rocks as well as various candy wrappers and toilet paper clumps.

So while we enjoy the overnight backpacking, we decided that we would go for a day hike...After much research I thought Boynton Canyon would be a good quick and easy hike for us and really close to the resort we were staying at.

After doing most of my day hikes in the Supes, White Tanks, and Estrellas, the super busy parking lot had me a little peculiar. Well, I guess I was looking for an easy trail and I WAS in Sedona right? :) Well, after starting out, the first part of the trail is by what you have read before, right by a resort. Unfortunately they were doing lots of construction and where was quiet a bit of noise polution from that. As we neared the back of the resort, we heard the beat of a drum and the calling of an Indian ritual. This was kind of cool to hear. I simulated my own dancing, imagining what they were doing down in the lush grass, and quickly realized their dancing definitely is an art.

About two thirds through the trail, this trail got really beautiful and lush. The pines and wide trail was wide enough for a casual stroll side by side. With many hikers on this trail, it made it easy to pass hikers or cross paths. We saw the ruins high up on the cliffs and would of really enjoyed going up to see them, but we weren't feeling the mood to bushwack or climb. This was our foo-foo Sedona trip right? :)

As we neared the end of the trail, you could see the canyon closing in on you. The end of the trail does have a decent ascent, but I feel it's worth it as you get a good view of the canyon you just hiked.

With a surgery-ridden knee, I was anxious to get passed the descent of the last section on the way back down. On the way back we ran into many of the people seeking energy or whatever they think they feel from the Vortex. I'm not into that stuff and made it known to every person asking me about the 'energy' I felt. Anyway, at least people are out hiking, we don't have to have similar personal interests right? :) The hike back was actually much more relaxing because we took our time and since we started late, we didn't have as much traffic coming in, as we were on our way out.

This trail was pretty cool. Lots of pretty areas and different looks. Amazing cliffs on each side with indian ruins within reach if you so choose. A definite must, but I would highly recommend a weekday if you are more of a solitude hiker.

This was my first overnight trip. My girlfriend and I decided that we've lived in Arizona our whole living and need to get out and explore it some more other than car camping and hunting. Wow, we are hooked. We have been doing some day hiking around the valley, but this was so much fun. We learned a lot but feel we were pretty well prepared. Our packs weighed in at 25% of each our weights, but we are going to be dropping that down hopefully to 20% with some new sleeping bags and limiting our use of stainless water bottles.

There was a lot of water in the canyon so we never had to track down any of the streams around but there was a lot of water trickling in at various locations. We had plenty of water for our simple overnighter, so we never had to filter, but the campsite we had right below the Indian ruins was very clear.

So glad we went out on Thursday and Friday instead of Friday/Saturday as when we were just getting back to the parking lot a group of about 25 scouts coming in that screamed sleepless nights. :)

We are ready for more and are hitting Bluff Springs Loop in a few weeks. Cannot wait!

Was a good easy hike. The elevation is pretty much all in the beginning of the hike as you go down into the canyon. We took someone with us that had recently had back surgery and we felt really bad as we didn't research it enough. I've learned now how to read the data on this site more that would of be good to know then. Nevertheless, I wish there was a little more water flowing, as it was pretty minimal.

Be cautious of where you drop down into the canyon onto the creek floor. When you are coming back, you can easily pass right by it. I think I added 3 miles as I had to chase after my buddy that was headed back to get back to his girlfriend a couple hundred yards in front of me. He skipped the trail back up to the parking lot and I literally had to huff it about 1.5m down the creek. At least I got a good cardio out of it. :)

The very top waterfall (the 70 footer) I feel takes some experience to get to. Admittedly, we didn't go up there because i had a bit of 'pucker factor' that I was not expecting. Also, since there isn't really a set trail once you get down into the wash/creek, you are doing a lot of rock hopping and you will get wet so just be prepared for that.

Very fun day hike!
