Another winter assent of a popular summer hiking trail. I used microspikes the entire trail as the meadow had man made snow and much if the trail had hard ice after the first rock slide. The trail was easily passable to the saddle. There wasn’t much of a trail from the saddle to the peak, only foot prints. There were often two sets of tracks and the the game became picking the right one. Temps started out at 21 in the parking lot to 30 at top, according to my thermometer. Lots of wind on the ridge to the peak. Not many others the trail.... photos in photoset #2

I have wanted to do this hike for a long time. The dreaded rim to rim to rim. I guess I just wanted to do this because it was there.

Started at the South Kaibab trail head at 7 am. A late start but within the parameters I setup. I wanted to be back at the first pump house at the bottom of the North Kaibab trail by dark. A relatively uneventful hike to Phantom ranch. The trail was much rougher than I remembered. Someone said the summer rains were heavy and trashed the trails. I thought it doesn't rain that much in the canyon but I'll get back to that. Hiked to Cottonwood then to the north rim. Again, relatively uneventful. There was a large crowd of people cheering anyone that came up the north side. I did a 8:30 south to north and I allotted 10 hours. I was too fast but feeling good. Changed shirts and ate my PB&J sandwich. Thanks to the people on top for helping me out. I started back down and was rushing a bit as my plan was getting off the north side before dark. At Roaring Springs I twisted my knee and it hurt pretty good. I recovered for a few minutes and the pain subsided, took two Advil and proceeded on. I got to Cottonwood at 7:30, making good time but slower because of the knee. I took an inventory of food and realized I was a bit short. I was eating too much going up the north side due to my speed. I could make Phantom Ranch by 10, I can restock an bit and enjoy a Lemmy..... I was hiking back to Phantom Ranch and it was dark.... pitch black. I was alone with all sorts of thoughts running around my head. Then it started to sprinkle a bit which I appreciated because the bugs were following my headlamp and flying into my face. The loneliness was getting to me.... I was over thinking everything out of boredom and driving myself nuts. I made it to Phantom Ranch ay 10:30 and they were closed. The knee really was slowing me down. I saw two girls in the kitchen and banged on the window and begged for some food. She returned with a bag filled with a variety of bars and nuts that other hikers left behind. I thanked her profusely and started for the south side. I made it across the bridge and it was raining harder. I made it to Devils Corkscrew and it was raining so hard my headlamp was blinding me as it reflected off the rain. The trail was flooded and now running pretty fast but not impassable. The logs in the trail that the mules use were slippery so I had to walk in the middle of the trail which was now one pool of water after the next. My boots were now filled with water and I could feel my toes rubbing together. Not good. I had extra socks but it was raining so hard and my boots were so wet, it wouldn't made a difference. I kept going, stopping only to change batteries. I finally made it to Indian Gardens about 1:30. Slower still because the knee was hurting pretty bad. I did do a little dance because I made it to Indian Gardens and the rain finally let up enough to take off the shell. I started up the hill looking for the first pump house. My knee was really slowing me down and at some point I thought I past it, someone stole it or they move it. That loneliness thing again. Finally, I found it and had only 3 more miles to go. My energy level was good but the knee was starting to swell up again. I was on my way to the second pump house and it took forever to get there. I kept telling myself it was just around the next switch back which lead me getting frustrated. This, in turn turn, caused me to become somewhat paranoid. I was officially getting loopy. I was tired at this point and just wanted to be done. I shook out the cob webs reading the signs at the last pump house and thinking about resting in the car. I started off for the top and I was getting frustrated over the knee. I had the energy to faster but the knee wouldn't let me. At one point I thought I was lost. I stopped, pulled out the cell phone and called up the Strava app to see where I was. Yup, a blue dot in a green field. This did not make me feel any better. But I realized that: 1. I was still going up 2. I still smelled mule poop and 3. I read all the signs at the pump house so I couldn't be lost. Ok, cob webs gone again.. off I went. I saw a bunch of lights coming down the trail... hikers getting an early start.... someone to talk to. I started to waive and yell hello only to realize it was 6 deer on the ridge above me. Their eyes were glowing from my light. I did stop and talk to them and while they didn't answer, they did stop and listen. This gave me enough to finish. I made it to the trail head about 3:30. Did a little dance and headed back to the car which was parked by the back country office. Got there, got a cold drink and took a nap until 8 and drove home.

I like hiking alone in the dark. I hike Camelback every Wednesday morning in the summer at 3:30 or 4 am. It's great. I've hiked Humphrys in the dark many times and its a blast. Even in the snow. I never thought that being alone in the canyon would affect me the way it did. The long time alone and the tiredness combined is a powerful drug. The iPod kept me sane and thankfully the battery lasted almost the entire trip. Stopping and reading EVERY sign also helped. People ask me would I do this again. I say no but in reality, as soon as my toenails grow back, I'd do it again. Maybe not alone but I'd do it again. It was a satisfying feeling getting back to the car, sitting in the seat and watching the Monday AM hikers get on the bus. I was wet and every muscle in my legs was screaming at me. But I had fun. I did something that most other over 50 year olds only see on a TV nature channel. It still brings a smile to my face.

I was asked to guide a pack of Boy Scouts up to the peak. Their scout master wanted to see if they could handle the effects of the altitude as they have a 12.6K hike next month.

The day started out like all the other hikes but as soon as we passed the first rock slide, the snow got deep. By the time we reached the saddle, there was no trail to follow and the single set of boot prints in the snow took us straight up to the saddle. Earlier in the week I warned them that crampons could be needed. As it turns out, none of the scouts had any which makes for a slippery hike. We stopped about 50 yards from the saddle and assessed the situation. While we were there, about 20 other hikers came up, all without any crampons or snow shoes. By this time, the sky turned from a bright blue to a very dark black. We decided to turn back and head down because of both the pending weather and the tough hike that the kids would have to do on the way down. As it turns out, all except one turned around. On the way down, I was amazed to see that no one had any type of boot help on. Gave my gloves to someone hiking up without any, she look cold and her hands were bright red. The rest of the hike on the way down was normal.

I don't see the snow pack on Humphrey's going away anytime soon. In fact, the forecast is calling for another 2 feet above 10,300 tonight and tomorrow. I'll try to summit at the end of this month.

Another snow summit of Humphrey's peak. It apparently snowed quite a bit as the snow just past the second rock slide switch back was difficult to go through. The snow got deeper as I approached the saddle, making for a real tough and long day. The trail was well marked except at the saddle and the area just past the saddle going to the top. The area by the two trail marker posts with the nylon rope had several different paths to choose from, most of which went straight up to the ridge. I also got off the trail coming back from the saddle and somehow ended up coming straight down the hill and ended up at the 11500 ft sign. Apparently the skiers are crossing over to the saddle and skiing down making many trails, skiing over the boot tracks (I personally saw three do this). I obviously followed the wrong one. The weather was very warm at top and almost no wind. I was way over dressed and needed a short sleeve shirt. A real clear day. The Grand Canyon was perfectly visible. As I was coming back from the summit, you could hear the snow pack start to shift a bit and when you walked on it, it was starting to sound hollow. I had to make a few diversions. There was no clear path from the parking lot across the meadow (ski area) and I had to dodge a few snow boarders. I guess the DO own the mountain!!!! Only 12 others on the trail. Pictures posted.

Had to wait until 9 for the rangers to get a permit (I had no idea).. Started the hike around 9... trail had snow from the onset. Used crampons. The trail was well marked and will packed for crampons.... absolutely no issue. Just before the saddle, the snow was getting deeper but the trail was still good. Made it to the saddle and decided to go on. Again, the trail was well marked except the last 200 feet or so just before the summit. Ended up off the trail, to the left. The snow off the trail was deep in spots, at least up to my thighs. Got to the top, touched the sign and left... to cold to stop moving..... Back to the car in 6 1/2 hours... snow makes it much harder..... almost no one else on the trail.....

A solo hike to the top. Started at 6:30 am and was somewhat dark. The trail was icy in spots but overall clear. Super cold at top with massive wind. The clouds were low and being blown over the peak. Almost no one was on the trail......

What a trip. Decided to hike to the top and spend the night. Packing 35 pounds of gear on one's back and climbing this is not a good time. Probably one of the harder hikes I have done. 2:40 up to Flatiron. We did stop alot. Last night the view was a bit hazy from all the dust from the excessive wind. Found two field mice on top that decided that our food was theirs. The night temps were perfect, great for sleeping. Hiked to the top this morning and finally made our way down. While a bit easier on the lungs, the trip down was a challenge with the packs. Overall a great hike and I would do this again.

Second part of a rim to rim hike. Whole hike was 8:03 without breaks. Ribbon falls was spectacular. This site underrates this hike. Much more difficult than a 3. Should be at lease a 4.5 due to the last 4 miles of altitude gain

After spending two days on the north rim, started the trek back in the dark to beat the heat. Had to hike to the trail head as the first shuttle is at 5:45. Easy hike down.

Good hike, terrible trail. Made for mules, not hiking. Water was available at all locations. Devils staircase was easy. Hardest part was from 2 miles from the top to 1 mile from the top. Too many stupid people hiking without water, shoes or clothing. The trail was extremely crowded at the top.

Did the hike his year with 5 newbies and what a mistake this was. The trail was hard to hike with the snow and the wind on top was astronomical. I have been in 120 mph typhoons and this was much worse. We had to crall the last 200 yards for fear of being blown off. Of the 7 that started, three turned back because of the wind. Going to schedule another hike in July. This was just too hard.... :o

Did the hike by myself and decided just to se how fast I could do it in. One hour and 30 minutes to the saddle and another 35 to the peak. I reasted at the top for 25 minutes and hikes back to the car in 4:30. Nothing spectacular on this trip other than the flies on top seemed to be absent.

Without a doubt, one of the best hikes in Arizona. My cycling teammate and I did the hike from the lower parking lot. The weather started great, but changed to cold and windy by the time we reached the saddle. We went to the top amid the clouds and wind. The temperature was about 30 degrees with a much lower wind chill. This is the 6th time for me to the top with many more to come, We already planning a September hike to the top.
