It is gorgeous on this mountain any time of year, although in the winter during a storm it can drop quite a bit of snow. But usually its not too bad. During the summer, it's hot. 90 degrees on average. The base and summit are beautiful and nestled in the pines and cedars, but most of the scramble up the face of the mountain is exposed to the sun, and on the basalt rock and lava its not uncommon for ground temperatures to reach in excess of 115 or 120. So you need to bring plenty of water, and really good shoes for the hike up. Lava rock can eat tennis shoes to pieces in less than an hour.
This hike is TOTALLY WORTH IT! It is absolutely beautiful! I highly recommend it. But you have to understand that getting there is costly. It's a long drive on a really rough road. I've traveled it probably 100 times, and theres about a 60% chance you will get at least 1 flat tire, and 100% guarantee you will need a realignment. And you will smell the dust from your A/C for the rest of your vehicles existence. Again, it's TOTALLY WORTH IT, but don't think this is an easy Sunday drive in the old Oldsmobile. |
