I don't know why every hike I do, my GPS says a longer distance and in this case also a larger elevation gain than any of the published distances/elevations?? Hmmm, happens on every hike. Either my gps is incorrect or apparently I make lots of detours that I don't recall lol. ANYWAY, I took the Lemmon Lookout down to Wilderness of Rocks, then took Lemmon Trl up to Meadow trail, back to the parking lot at the top. It was a lovely day and I was sad that I forgot my camera so had to make do w/ cell phone pics which did not do justice. I did find myself gasping for air (more oxygen please!!)for nearly the entire leg/climb of the Lemmon trl. I went on a Wed, so only saw one other party of hikers and that was brief. I love the solitude of being alone in the woods (:

This was the first time I had taken Wilderness of Rocks in that direction (have always explored towards the marshal saddle direction) and was a little bummed that so much of it was exposed and not deep in the pines but still was beautiful in its own way. I will say that the lemmon trail and ESPECIALLY the meadow trail, were really beautiful and gave my soul what it was looking for that day. I could have lingered in the meadow trail area, maybe come back and find a little hidden backpacking spot someday...so pretty!

All the little creeks had water, though not much more than a trickling stream. There was a scan wildflower showing, mostly the occasional penstemon and indian paintbrush. No wildlife sightings other than some chipmunks and one baby horny toad (:

Did Butterfly trail starting from the trailhead across from the ranger station (Bigelow trail technically)and since I didn't have a chase vehicle had to do a loop. I chose to take Catalina Hwy back down to Bear Wallow Rd and then once Bear Wallow empties back out to the hwy, just walked the shoulder for the last little section. I heard there is a trail from Bear Wallow area over to Bigelow but I don't know where to pick that up & was happy walking the road. Overall the hike was nice. The water was flowing at Novio Springs (I think that was the creek I crossed?)and the pools looked so inviting!! Many yrs ago I had done what I thought was the butterfly trial, starting from Soldier Camp, but apparently I had turned off on Crystal Spring trail & somehow I hadn't remembered that. So, as I was hiking along yesterday I was perplexed as to why this trail didn't look like the one I remembered? And where was that awesome spot I was going to eat my lunch lol? Well, once I saw the intersection for Crystal Spring, it all came back to me & I realized what happened. So, now I know next time I want to plan to take Crystal Spring trail because it was gorgeous all those years ago! Although it's not technically part of the trail, I have to say my favorite part aside from the spring, may have been walking the dirt road thru Bear Wallow. I could stay in those pine trees forever, ahhhhh. Still mad at myself for not bringing camping gear, was a perfect day/evening for that & I actually had the time off. Wah wah... Hopefully pine air is in my near future!! I posted a few pics but the backside of Lemmon is kind of uninspiring to me so there aren't too many. All in all, it was a nice little hike, glad I went, but next time I'm figuring out a chase vehicle so I can do Butterfly starting at the ranger station, but then turn off and do Crystal Springs to the control rd.

I had taken this trail just a week or two prior but had stopped at Bridal Falls. I had seen the sign for the Douglas Spring Campground several miles down the trail. I was on a time crunch the first day, so this next trip I planned to go to the camp. I have never backpacked (am dying to go!)and so wanted to see what a backpacking campground looked like, and also wondered how my stamina would hold up on a longer hike. I have only recently been extending my hikes beyond the 5-7 mi range...I had no idea how much fun I have been missing!!! Loving the longer, more challenging hikes (: Anyway, so this day I set out thinking I was doing a hike in the ballpark of 11.8-12.2mi range, but somehow my gps said I did 14.3?? I also had only planned time wise for the 12mi range. Well, 30min after my estimated halfway point (which was the campground), I still had not reached the site. I panicked for a moment, wondering if I got on a different trail with out realizing it?? But no, just a few turns later there it was. Sadly though, my leisurely lunch break was not so restful. I inhaled my sandwich, took a few pics, and 15 min later was heading back. I made it back by dusk, so that worked out. I was pretty tired too- the last mile was where I physically hit a wall & one knee was pretty angry with me but a few days later was fine again (:

All in all, it was an awesome day & I found a beautiful tank/walled in pool that was awesome. The biggest highlight was finding and getting pics of a pregnant Collared Sonoran Lizard. I didn't know she was pregnant until I was researching, trying to identify the species. She had red bands on her neck & turns out those are only there when gravid (pregnant)! Also explains why she was so fat and didn't run away during the 10 min I took pics of her at every angle LOL! Can't wait until it's cool outside to do the trail again but this time backpacking and stay the night.

I did not make it to the top (again)... I did however complete about 5.5 mi by the time I got back to my truck. It was a gorgeous day and I knew I didn't have enough time to make it the whole way, but I also realized by the time I turned around that I did not have the desire to continue any higher haha! I don't really feel safe balance-wise up there, feel like I could lose my footing at any time on some of those gravel covered rocks and then off the cliff I would go :( So, especially b/c I go alone most of the time, I try to listen to my gut and not push my limits too much. Anyway, the flowers were out and I got some great pics and just enjoyed being out hiking instead of buried in my books. I could go on about the flowers I saw but the pictures say it best so check 'em out!!

Somehow it has taken me 15+ yrs of living in Tucson to finally do seven falls. It was a nice hike but LOTS of people. I prefer solitude but it was a pretty hike and amazing destination, so I can see why it's so popular. The California poppies were out in good numbers. I wondered why no one was swimming when I got to the falls, but then when I tried to wade in I realized that the water is pretty chilly!! Still fun to go in a little ways, refreshing (: My friend and I relaxed and sunned for quite some time on the rocks of one of the upper pools & had the area mostly to ourselves. All in all, was a nice day. I'm glad I finally did the hike but I do think I'll go back to finding quiet, lonely trails!! (:

Hi! This is my very first post!! :) I took this trail in the late afternoon, had some time to kill before meeting friends for dinner on the east side. Anyway, hadn't been on this trail in years and had forgotten how nice it was. Not sure why, but 12-15 yrs ago when I last did this trail, I never went far enough to see the falls, which just seems crazy because it's not a long trail. Regardless, I was determined to see what was around the next curve in the trail when I ran across the sign telling me there was a waterfall in .2mi. So, even though I was at my time limit to turn around so that I didn't loose daylight, I decided to go the short distance. The waterfall was more like a trickle but I am amused easily and so I was happy anyway. It would be awesome after more rain. The added bonus to all of this was I was forced to trail run back down the trail to make up time and in doing so realized it is a fun trail to run too!! I do want to go back with more time and planning. Would love to pack in and do an overnight. I'm new to backpacking but am slowly gathering the equipt and one of these days will find a willing party to go with me.
My favorite part of the hike?? Probably the gorgeous shadows and light as the sun was setting and I was racing down the mountain. OH!! AND... just a few feet from the trailhead, there was a couple getting married right then at dusk!!! Crazy! Here I come running down the hill making all kinds of noise and boom! there's a wedding!! Needless to say I tried to tip toe at that point haha. The bride had the full wedding dress and all that... Very small & intimate gathering of prob 6 or 7 people total. Very cool & what a beautiful night for the couple. So there's my story of a simple little hike that hit the spot just right.
