We camped in West Stronghold Saturday night and we were lucky to find a camping spot. We couldn't believe how crowded it was! Went for a short hike up Slavin Gulch before driving further up into the mountains to "escape the crowds". We knew some of the mining history of the area, and had actually read about the chutes that were constructed to get the ore down into Slavin Gulch where trucks could haul the ore to Bisbee to be processed. This was done because Slavin Gulch was safer/easier for the trucks... hard to imagine this was the safer of the two roads when you are hiking in the narrow rocky canyon! Beautiful hike, wonderful views, hummingbirds, the smell of wild grapes blooming. We'll be back! |
